New tires - again!!!!!

Wife took the car for an oil change and the tech said the rear tires needed changing and were cupped. I have had 3 sets of tires on this vehicle - 2 sets of Pirelli Scorpions and the last set were Conti 4X4s and I aligned the car before changing the last set. My wife drives this car 99% of the time, mostly around town.

It it possible that there is a chronic problem with this car that causes accelerated tire wear? Do the XC90s have problems keeping an alignment?

Re: New tires - again!!!!! (Jeffdel1965)

I've not had a problem with ours. The tires are Michelin Synchrone 4x4 and their is likely about 3/16ths or more tread left at 38k miles. I figure on replacing them in about a month and a half at 40k.

I've not had any cupping or alignment issues. Treadware looks even throughout on all four tires.

Re: New tires - again!!!!! (Jeffdel1965)

There is a Tech-NET Note for the early XC90's like ours. It is TNN65-03-2003-03-14. The rear wheel toe specification was not correct for early XC90's. I don't know the VIN range, but my production date was 10/02 like yours and my VIN is under 3500, and my rear toe specification was off causing premature wear on the right rear.

I suggest having another 4-wheel alignment at a competent alignment shop or at your Volvo dealership.

Yes, you are certainly not alone - I had the dealer replace a set of Pirelli Scorpions on a T6 after 14,500 miles. Car had been aligned at 7000 miles and balanced and rotated regulary. Similar - wife drives car around town.

Re: New tires - again!!!!! (dachshund2)

I'm well aware of the misalignment out of the factory. My first set of Pirellis barely made it past 12K and Volvo replaced the tires under warranty and realigned the vehicle correctly.

Re: New tires - again!!!!! (dachshund2)

Is a wheel alignment supposed to be covered by the Volvo warranty? I called my dealer and they said only up to 12K miles and ours has 15XXX miles. I also am experiencing the cupping of both front tires.

Re: Bridgestone Alenza's (Jeffdel1965)

I saw these the other day at the tire store. I'm considering these as a replacement for the Pirelli Scorpions. I've read some great reviews on them.

Re: Bridgestone Alenza's (Config)

I replaced my "original equipment" about 8000 km ago with the Alenza Dualers. So far, they seem to be a great tire. I have not driven them under any kind of extreme weather so i cannot be too certain. Certainly, they are reviewed very favorably.

Ever since the XC 90 was new, there was a little "shudder" when I exceeded 125 km. I didn't bother with it as I suspected it was just a balance problem. Anyway, I can now cruise at well above 125 and there is no vibration of any kind.

Tire Choice and Tire Wear

Purchased the Conti 4X4s again from TireRack for $94 each - didn't want to part with anymore $$$ if the tires won't last more than 20K. Tire rack rep confirmed that the XC90s have an extremely poor reputation for premature tire wear due to the AWD system and weight issues.

Re: Bridgestone Alenza's (Jeffdel1965)

Bought four from TireRack about 8,000 miles ago. They seem to be perfectly fine--no vibration at speed, good grip, aggressive tread. Haven't used them in rain or snow yet, however. I'd recommend them.

Re: New tires - again!!!!! (dachshund2)

Does this mean Volvo is liable and responsible for replacing tires and providing an alignment? Our early build '03 T6 has this exact problem and we've been going through tires way too much (the right rear is gone again now) and the dealership charges for alignment which hasn't helped much.

If I show up with this TNN number should I reasonably expect Volvo to step up and replace tires?

Re: New tires - again!!!!! (Jeffdel1965)

We blew through the original Michelin Synchrone in about 24K. I track and trend the tread wear at each Maintenance Service Interval and was should have gotten at least 30K based on the readings after the 15K Service. By the 22.5K Service the rears were shot and the fronts not much further behind. Check the post below for additional info on tires and alignments.

Re: Bridgestone Alenza's (Jeffdel1965)

We just replaced our Michelin Pilots (235/60/18) with the Bridgestone Alenza (255/55/18) last week at 35,000 miles.

So far (50 miles?) they are great. Much quieter that the Michelins, but then again, all NEW tires are pretty quiet. We'll see how they do when they get a few miles on them.

Re: Bridgestone Alenza's (jaynlisa)

I decided to replace my tires sometime this week with Alenza's. 32K with miles left in the OE tires, but these were lousy tires in bad weather when new...

My local Firestone store will match the Tirerack price with shipping of $142 each plus mounting/balancing...

BTW, there's a new $75 rebate out if you buy between Sept 15-Oct 15. I should have new Alenza's by next weekend for around $610 before rebate.

Re: Bridgestone Alenza's (Jeffdel1965)

I asked my local tire dealership in Cleveland, Ohio (Conrad's) to replace my OEM Michelins with the Alenzas. They refused to do so because of the difference in size and speed rating. They called Volvo and was told that changing size and stiffness (speed rating) of the tire will effect the RSC (Roll Stability Control) and the DSTC (Dynamic Stability Traction Control). If you only drive your XC90 around town and don't test its limits it might not make a difference.
