After about a year of ownership, the faux wood trim in my '01 HPT/5M Coupe (black/tan) is starting to bug me.
Image
IMO, there are too many different colors going on on the interior:

1) light tan on the seats/carpet/lower dash
2) darker tan/light brown on the upper section of the dashboard
3) dark grey of A/C vents, airbag module, heater/radio controls, shift gaiter
4) dark faux wood of center console and glovebox door strip

I know Volvo made a dark grey center console/glovebox strip for cars not optioned with the faux wood. Does anyone know where I can get one? I've checked evilBay to no avail and I'm sure I can't afford to buy a replacement part from the dealer. So I'm wondering if I'm consigned to looking through wrecking yards.

Does anybody know if the center console/glovebox strip design was the same MY'98 through MY'?? and if the same parts are used on the Coupe and Convertible? That would open up my search options considerably.

Alternately, anybody with a grey center console looking to "upgrade" to faux wood?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Replacing faux wood interior trim (The Volvonator)

Faux wood? I have a '99 convert, and that "faux" wood is real Walnut burl for which the original owner paid an extra $600 (I have the original window sticker). It has so many coats of clear on it that it can look plastic, but I am unaware that Volvo ever used faux wood on the C70 dash. Take a look at the little bit of "wood" on the rear seat center console. See how much different and more plastic it looks? That's because it is plastic. But not on the dash and center console, unless your car is different than mine.

Re: Replacing faux wood interior trim (DouginDenver)

And the types of wood changed over the years. If you go to the Volvo site now you can still see the options (though the car is out of production) - redwood is one. The basic trim with no upfrade inthe early years - which is stil the basic - was just a matte black plastic. In later years they also offered a brushed aluminum and carbon fiber.

To answer your other questions, I am 99.999% certain that there have been no chages to those pieces in any year the car was made, that the cuope and convert are the same, and I'm pretty sure they shaer those pieces with the S70.

My S70 has the dark faux wood center console and glovebox door strip as you describe. It is also around the stereo and down around the gear shift and up to the center arm rest (whichever you mean by center console). Same looking (though confirmed to be plastic) is below the front's arm rest, in the back center around the ash tray and cig. lighter area. Unfortunately it is not above/around the stearing column...and I wish it was...I really like the look of this...reminds me of our old 850 Turbo Wagon which had similar trim.

Sounds like you DO have aftermarket dash trim.
It can someyimes be OK.

As for the above post, if your trim is factory it is REAL wood.
You can substitute it with a myriad of different woods (3 I think) and aluminum trims (3, I know) from Volvo

OK. Fake wood, real wood....whatever.

I want to swap it out for the "basic" dark grey trim pieces. Where can I get me some???

The other alternative that might work is brushed aluminum. I seem to remember there being either OEM or aftermarket aluminum trim pieces, which might be an option if I can't locate the OEM grey ones (or if they're too expensive.)

Re: (The Volvonator)

To each his own I guess. I would check dealer prices first because I'm thinking they could be pretty pricey from a scrap yard unless they had already been removed because as I understand it the one around the radio requires some serious labor time to remove. You would want to confirm what is required before you jump in I think. The guys at the Volvspeed forum can probably tell you. The carbon fiber ones look pretty cool. That basic gray looks pretty - well - basic. They have a new one in a dealer showroom here I just looked at that has that.

This is from a US model 1998 C70 coupe

That is about the worst I have ever seen

This is the basic plastic...

You really don't want that.
The (aluminum) pieces won't break the bank, it's the labor to install the radio stack and the console that will. The glovebox is easy
I don't think that the aluminum trim will cost all that much more then the basic grey plastic so if you're going to replace them with ANY factory pieces go for the aluminum

Good point, Jim. Even though the grey doesn't look as upscale as the wood/faux wood, it's the introduction of yet another dark color (wood) that I'm starting to react negatively to with my beige interior.

I had briefly considered the aluminum, but discounted it, as I assumed it would be too expensive. If priced similarly to the wood/plastic, then it will likely jump to the top of the list. I might even end up getting some of the Al door lock pins and pedal sets from the GBs on the R board.

I have a C70 sales flyer (2-sided) that shows a 2001 C70 Special Edition, which I *think* may have been the only version offering the Al trim kit. It also sports the XC-style grille, leather covered shift knob and some other details I can't remember right now.

If you don't mind me asking, where'd you get the eggcrate grille for your S70? Also, I seem to recall seeing that type of grille in grey/silver, rather than black, though I could be completely off-base. Since my coupe is black, I'm thinking the grey grille might break up the black a little bit. Do you know if Volvo did, in fact, make a grey version? Thanks.

That center console thingy between the rear seats shown in that picture is the cheapest looking and ugliest and cheapest feeling piece in the C70 interior. Whoever speced that part should be stripped naked and thrown into the Swedish winter.
