Re: Dealer Oil change prices.... (morenar-s40)

I paid around $20 for the filter. Don't know about the rest of the change though but if you wait until 7500, 15000, 22500, and 30000 miles those are free. Something in me couldn't wait until 7500 so I bought the filter and oil and did it myself at around 3000 miles.

What?!?!?!?!? WOW... Do all new cars cost this much for oil filters? Whatever happened to 3 for $12?

I was going to wait till 7500 but after reading some posts on synthetic I wanted to change it at 3500. How easy is it to change on the s40 plus where did you get the filter?

What are your dealers charging for oil changes? I just called mine and the service rep told me $75.00

He said the oil filter is like $35.00.

My dealer charges approx $40 or so for the "express change" which skips alot of the various "check this" and "lube that" stuff. Since I bring my own oil, it's closer to $30. A full service change is around $60.

I asked the guy if that included any sort of checks and he said nope just the oil change.

I would call around to another Volvo dealer and price compare just to satisfy your curiosity. Sounds too expensive for a non synthetic oils change.

That's the closest one. The next one is about 45 minutes away. I might do it myself if it's easy to do.

What's this crush washer I keep hearing about for the oil filter? It appears that the filter is a cartridge, and not an external one...but I don't see why a new washer would have to be installed every time?

Just take a saturday or sunday morning and just do it yourself. The tricky thing might be the oil filter depending on where it's placed and the ease of getting it off. I don't know the anatomy of the S40...but I suspect that it can't differ that much from the basic car. Just get enough newspaper or be careful enough so that you don't make a mess. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

This is the newest car we have. I did get that at the dealer since Auto Zone didn't have any and probably won't any time soon. The one for my truck is much less $3 or $4 but it's not a fine European import.

The crush washer goes on the oil drain bolt. I don't know if you have to replace it every time but the new filter came with it so I put it on.

Was it pretty easy to change the oil and filter?

The hardest part was getting the cap off of the filter housing. I wrote some instructions at VolvoS40club.com

Oil Change instructions

I'll be needing to do it again in about 500 miles or so. I'll try to add more pictures.

i got my oil filter at a volvo dealership here in charlotte, nc... i think with the crush washer it totaled just over $10.

i followed fiber optic's instructions and finished in well under an hour. it was initially hard to figure out what ducting to remove, but no step was too complicated. it definately took some time to remove the filter cap because you can only turn it about an 1/8 of a turn at once (if that), but that's just how it is.

i spent about $50 buying wheel ramps, torx bits, and a drain pan... but they should pay for themselves after another oil change.

It's rather important to replace both the filter housing o-ring and the crush washer every time in these cars. The o-ring especially, since you really don't want a leak there.

The Volvo oil filter part (8692305) usually comes as the filter insert and o-ring, but not the crush washer. Did your dealer give you the washer separately?

Tom.

Yes, he added the crush washer into the box and mentioned it going on the drain bolt. Otherwise I would not have known about it.
