I replaced the automatic shift knob on my 2008 S80. The original knob was entirely beige leather but dirty and had a small cut from the previous owner. I thought the same replacement would get dirty again, so I bought the 2010-11 version with aluminum accent sides. I bought it from Steingold Volvo on eCrater for $55 + shipping. It was actually listed for the S60, but is the same knob that fits the S60, S80, V70, XC70 (part no. beige 30756901; black 30756902). I was a little disappointed that the aluminum accents are not metal but just silver colored plastic. Despite looking a bit cheaper, it does look good with the contrasting accents.

New knob with aluminum side accents (plastic) vs older all leather knob:

I should really just do this. My S80 knob is dirty/worn as well, and I like the newer version a lot better (we have it in the XC70).
Mainly holding out in case I go whole hog and do the 2013+ shifter update instead...

Replacement instructions:

1. Simply rotate the square collar at the bottom of the knob and let it drop.
2. Underneath where the collar was, locate the two tabs along the shift stem.
3. Using a small screwdriver, gently pry the tabs a little so they release from the indentation on the stem.
4. Once the tabs are released, press and hold the shifter button and pull the entire knob straight up with a little force.
5. Installation of the new knob is the reverse.

I am also thinking about repairing the old shift knob as a backup. It would be quite easy to refinish the center leather piece which is simply clipped to the main knob. After removing this center piece, you can see the leather is just glued on and covers black plastic. I could remove the leather and use it as is, or recover with new black leather that won't show dirt as much.

The 2008-2012 models (and 2007 S80s too) have the old style shifter seen in post #1 in this thread. Manual shifting is to the right of Drive.

The 2013 and later shifter style with the black knob and leather gaiter, seen in itwontstopsnowins post #5 has the manual shifting selection to the left of Drive.

I was going to say that the RHD versions have the same layout but as I googled pictures I found that it doesn't seem to be that way.

This is a 2011 or 2012 S60 (site was a bit unclear on that): http://goautomedia.cdn.on.net/gallery/volvo/s60/2010_06_01_volvo-s6013.jpg
2014 S60: http://goautomedia.cdn.on.net/gallery/volvo/s60/2013_10_16_volvo_s60_v60_10.jpg

Seems as the 2013+ shifters are identical between LHD and RHD cars whereas 2008-12 cars (including 2007 S80s) have different ones.

Do you have a RHD or LHD car btw, in case that's why you're asking?

Thanks for this! Yes it looks like in the newer cars they didnt change direction anymore, LH or RH... The same.

Older shift seems different. I think you answered my question. If I wanted to put a new shiftstick on my '11 the indications would be wrong!

If you want the new style shifter, the one that itwontstopsnowin posted, you have to dig into the center console and replace the whole assembly. There's a whole thread about that here that I saw you found. I think there are installation pics in there somewhere. Bottom line is that when you change the whole assembly, the gear knob indication will match the direction you move the lever. As for having to move the lever another way than you do today is just a matter of getting used to it.

Ha! Glad it helped. This was just a simple little post on how to replace the knob. Then the moderator hijacked the thread to make it about how he replaced his entire shifter. That's like sharing you got new tires and someone says you should have replaced your wheels, too.
