Re: What's your mpg on your S40? (sanger)

Did not notice any difference between Super and Regular gas.
Did you try two tanks of Super? The system takes a while to restore the 91+ octane tuning if it falls back to the "regular" mode. In our XC90, the mileage rises somewhat, but the performance rises a lot on super, btw.

Tom.

update:
my average 80% street driving was 23.5mpg

this weekend, we took our S40 down to San Diego and got a much better 27.5mpg

fuel: approximately 50% 89 octane and 50% 91 octane (because I switch every time I fuel up between 89 and 91)

Looking at these figures, it seems I fall under the "spirited driving" category

S40 T5 6sp - avg around 11l/100km. Includes quite a bit of traffic though. Nothing like putting the onboard to "Instantaneous Consumption" to make your right foot lighter!

Isn't that inefficient. I mean when you pour 89 octane the computer backs off the timing. Then when you pour 91, it runs for a while at a lower advance until it realizes it can advance the timing some. Then later when you switch back to 89, the car pings like crazy so the computer has to back up timing again.

I just filled my first tank at 292 miles with 14 gallons. Computer displays 23.0 avg mpg and 35 miles left till empty. Actual mpg is 20.85. 50% hiway, 50% city.

I use 91 all the time, and pretty much from the same station because I usually need to fill up by the station near the office.
I figure since gas is not as insanely high as a few months ago, why not?
Plus with the S40, my gas bill at the pump has been less than $30 bucks a pop.
I usually average around 27 bucks per fillup and I fill up once every 2 weeks.
My commute is not too long, and when I really drive a lot its on the weekends, which is mostly freeway driving.

@ 3000 miles on my S40 T5 AWD, I get 28-30 mpg on a highway-only trip. Suburb mileage is definitely worse, around 21-23 mpg.

impressive numbers - is this still the case now?

Re: What's your mpg on your S40? (Tommunist)

Yep, I'm still seeing that. Sometimes it's 27.5 if it's windy. I use 91 octane gas when it's available, and 93 otherwise. Strangely, I haven't really seen any improvement in mileage after break-in. (I'm around 8,000 miles today.)

Re: What's your mpg on your S40? (eurotrash)

First week with my new V50 2.4i.

70% highway-30%city.
Average temp around 0 degrees Celsius all week.
568km with my first tank and 51 liters to refuel it (I only use 91 Octane).

This is approximately 9 liters/100km. Pretty good!

Re: What's your mpg on your S40? (Basil65)

Are you guys using the car's estimated MPG? Mine seems to be around 2 mpg off. I mean my actual mpg is about 2 mpg lower. The estimate is worse if I decide to floor it 2 or 3 times. Car can really drink gas when it needs to.

Re: (wpbear)

I use my car most to drive to and from work which is about 17 miles each way. About 25% city and 75% hiway. I usually get 27mpg actual. The instantaneous mpg is around 29-31 mpg while I'm cruising on the hiway.

While I was out of town one day, my car was driven in 100% city for 3 days. When I took it to the road again it was showing 22-24 instantaneous mpg. It was not until I've driven it for 3 hours on the hiway until it slowly crept it way back to 29-31 mpg again. So it seems that if you drive city a lot, the car adapts to that driving setting so you won't see good hiway mpg for a while.

Anybody thinks the brand of gas matters? So far I've only used Chevron and Exxon. It feels like I get slightly higher mpg with Exxon. I like to use Chevron because I've heard good things about Techron. They even put more Techron in the super unleaded. Now I'm going to use Exxon for a while and see how well my mpg does.

The instantaneous gas mileage should change every second or so, and should go up to 99.9 if you are coasting in neutral, or if you take your foot off the gas for a few seconds. The average gas mileage changes more slowly depending on when you last reset it (its just averaging, so the longer you driver the harder it is to change the average) and I'm assuming when people say actual, they mean the number they get when they divide the number of miles they drove on that tank by the number of gallons the car took to fill.

Re: (skibum)

I'm sure that most people know that Instanteous mpg means the mpg at that very instant. Just driving the car for a few minutes you can see the numbers jump around like crazy. So the numbers I gave are during flat roads where the numbers can be sustained for a minute or more. Even during that time the numbers still jump around a bit. That's why I gave it a little range. My mpg is actually less judging the miles I traveled till my next fill up. On a previous road trip I was able to reach 400 miles on a tank of gas. That's with about 90-95% hiway driving mostly at 70-80 mph.
