Had the opportunity to drive a momentum plus yesterday at my local dealer. Very impressed. The interior, exterior appeal, road manners, technology, power, handling and brakes were all fantastic. One question I did have was why the steering wheel was made so much smaller? To be honest, it does feel slightly disproportionate to the rest of the interior volume. Just curious if there was some sort of technicical reasoning behind it.

It gives the impression that the car is more nimble, since you have to turn your hands less to have the same amount of steering angle at the wheels. I really like the smaller wheel on my S40 (from my older V70 at least) for that effect, and I'm sure that women who drive this model will really appreciate it.

And very often you can turn on ACC and let go the steering. This thing goes along the road on its own!

I'm all for small steering wheels when appropriate (think S2000 or e46 3-series)....just seems odd for a 5,000 lb 7 seater!
If anything, I would think an S2000 or similar sports car would need a larger steeringwheel to make steering inputs more easily adjusted and precise, albeit with faster steering ratios to make up for it.

I paid attention to it as well after reading about it on the forums last Saturday. It did look small compared to my qx60 but it 'felt' fine during my drive and didn't make me go 'damn, this is small or strange'. Everyone's mmv on this one. The one thing that I noticed about the steering on comfort is that this vehicle has one of the easiest/lightest/turning (choose your description) steering wheels I've ever had in a car at low speeds.

You should be able to adjust this as well.

Easily. The old XC90s 4 prong wheel was U G L Y.
i don't have the 4 prong, i have the wooden wheel and it was nice. When i first saw the pictures of the steering wheel on the new xc90, i thought it looked awfully small. i was going to wait in person to see but it seems like it is true it is small! probably for chinese ladies :) (note I am chinese!)

You can, that's why I mentioned in comfort mode. :)
Actually, the wheel force can be adjusted (light, medium or heavy). It is in the vehicle settings menu.

I don't think it is the four prong design that's ugly, just the crud they put all over it.

I have the four prong in my XC60 and prefer it to the V-wheel in the newer S60s as far as design goes but I prefer the contours of the S60 wheel.

I wonder if they make a contoured four-prong wheel...
