Does anyone have a guide/howto on fitting a Pertronix ignition system onto a 122? I know IPD sells the kits but I want to see the instructions before buying to see if it's something I could feasibly do myself or whether I should just delegate it to my mechanic. Also, will the Pertronix ignition screw with my tach? I'm guessing it won't since the tach operates on the pulses between the dist and coil?

Before you can know the entire install process, you need to determine what distributor you have, and whether your coil is stock or not. If you have the stock coil, you'll need to get the diode kit or cut into the shielded cable going from your ignition switch to the coil.
If you have an aftermarket coil, you won't need the diode kit.
The quickest way to tell if you have the stock coil or not is to look at the top of your coil: if it has one post it's stock, if it has 2 it's aftermarket.

very straightforward. Make sure you get the right kit for cast Iron or Aluminum dist. The pictures on IPD website are misleading. Pull the distributor at TDC, replace same way, drive warm up car, and set timing if you have a light.

So, getting back to this, can someone please walk me through doing the Pertronix on an original armored coil? I bought the kit for my cast iron distributor and the diode wire, but IPD's instructions are too vague for a non-electronic guy like me I guess and I don't want to fry the thing... The kit as it comes says that the diode is directional for one thing, but I don't know how to tell the "direction". There are two red 16 ga leads going into the diode bit, one longer than the other. There's a single male spade on the other end of the diode. There are no connectors on either of these red wires. They tell you install the leads as in diagram A on the reverse side of the instructions but there is no diagram A, only instructions for dealing with the tach on an 1800...
The Hall sensor seems straightforward mechanically and has a black and red lead coming off of it. I believe that you connect one lead from the distributor to the male spade of the diode but then I'm not so sure. One of the red diode leads goes to the starter solenoid , the other to a wire that's hot when the ignition is on. Does the "direction" of the diode have anything to do with which of the red leads goes where? And what might be the best spot to grab that hot wire? They give you one of those mid-line clip connectors but I've never been a fan of them; I like terminals that screw down or at least a spade...
Looking for sage advice...again!

Thanks sndynight... Actually, shortly after posing this question I called IPD and asked for someone that might be knowledgable an this install and spoke with a 122 guy who was very helpful. It seems pretty simple after hearing it but I still haven't gotten around to it...having too much fun just driving instead of fixing for a change! The car runs great with points but it'll probably run even better when I do the complete tuneup that it deserves. After complete brakes and new clutch and pages of other things we both needed some time on the road. I've put a couple thousand miles on her and things are feeling really good. After suspension bushings and front and rear sways we should really be in business...
