Greetings All.

Just thought I'd share a few pics of an 'upgrade' I did a week ago in our 2006 XC90 V8. I bought a roll of this Carbon Fiber-like looking material (some kind of vinyl I assume) off eBay a good while ago... but just never got around to putting it on. I thought it was a good time to do it, as I needed to pull the stereo out to inspect the connector on the CD changer.

Going from memory, I popped up the (2) rubber pieces in front and back of the center console to expose the Torx screws, which I believe were T15 or T20. Remove those, pop up the plastic piece surrounding the shifter and I think you'll then have access to the main piece to cover. Cut a piece about 1" larger on all sides... peel back, put in place and smooth out. I used a sharp X-Acto knife to trimming, taking care on the corners.

The piece on the glove box was real easy, only (2) screws to remove to get that out.

Total time invested was about 30-45min, and I think it's a HUGE improvement over looking the f-ugly woodgrain. I removed the flip-down/up door that usually covers the drink holder area. Not needed, it was usually in the 'up' position anyways.

I have one more small area to do, on the back of the center console... but I really don't 'see it' that much, so I'll get to it eventually.

This is my first time trying to insert/post pics in a message... so we'll see if it works. If it doesn't, my apologies. Perhaps someone could offer to assist. :)

Take care.

Gregg

Let me know whatcha think!

I think I got it to work... see original post for pics! :)

Very nice. I went for the aluminum OEM trim from the R designs but this looks phenomenal.

Wow, looks really nice! I wouldn't have expected it having read your post headline. You're right, it's a huge improvement over the faux wood.

Thanks guys... I appreciate your kind words. I was expecting a "yea... that's cool", or something like that.

I didn't know how else to describe it for a thread title, so I thought something with Carbon Fiber and 'upgrade' would do.

I'm glad I shared it here on SS... the best Volvo Forum around! I'll be doing the same thing in my 98' S70, but I think it will still look better in the XC90 with the dark gray colored interior... as opposed to a tan/beige interior in the S70.

Take care,

Gregg

Wrapping the interior bits is pretty common in certain circles. What caught my eye was the missing cup-holder door. I think I like it.

NickA,

Sorry I don't have the exact seller I went through, I bought the vinyl sheet at least a year ago (if not 2 years ago)... but here's basically what I bought:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/3D-Top-Grad.../390579027726?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5af052ff0e&vxp=mtr

There's quite a few sellers on eBay that have it. They come in different sizes, all depends on how 'crazy' you want to get with it! I think I got a 24"x60" sheet... but at $6.80 for a 12"x60" sheet, I think it's pretty inexpensive way to liven up the interior a little. I just searched eBay on 'carbon fiber vinyl'... and got 20K+ results. The seller in the link above has sold 4,400+ of these, so I'd trust them. It may even be the place I bought from, but as mentioned, it was quite a while ago. Sorry.

Yes, no more cup holder door! We always left it 'down' (or retracted) anyways... and it just got in the way. A small gap is created when removed, but I don't see it as a big deal. You just need to take a few Torx screws out to get to the door piece to remove it. Not bad at all.

As I mentioned in the first post, I just need to do the rear of the removable center console, but it's not that visible anyways, so not a huge rush on that. I just couldn't stand looking at that faded ugly-@ss woodgrain anymore every time I looked down towards the shifter or control panel. Yuck!

Take care gents.

Nice idea. I just ordered a sheet of the 4D gloss black carbon fiber for $8. I'm not quite sure what 4D really is, but the cup holder cover on mine has a crack in it and this looks like a good solution. I just removed and painted the shifter bezel. What should have been a simple task of course turned into a nightmare when I dropped the Winter mode button between the foam carpet insulation and the floor pan.

Sorry to hear Cropduster... but yes, another simple (and inexpensive) solution to cracked bezels or similar pieces. Great idea!

Looks great. Anything is better than wood grain. I strongly dislike wood grain. I can't believe car makers continue to put it in cars. Just curious, Could you have sanded and painted the trim gloss black?

Yes. That would not be a problem. I removed and painted the shift bezel. I used silver and then clear coat. I don't mind the woodgrain in Volvos as some restraint is exercised but the Asian cars, especially Lexus are over the top with it.

I looks awesome with your black interior!

Wow... thanks for all the kind words guys. I appreciate it. Didn't expect it, but I do appreciate it. If I think of it... I take a few 'zoomed out' photos to share. The close-ups are nice, but a nice panned out shot would be cool to share as well.

Sinisin... yea, I probably could've sanded and spray painted. However, I will say I didn't even think of it and I like the look of the carbon fiber more. :) For me, it's a bit more stylish.

FYI, I plan to upload some pics of the S70 interior that I did the same thing to... but I can't seem to figure out how to get the center plate around the radio out. I'm missing some screws somewhere. I haven't had a ton of time lately, but I'll get to it. Will post when complete.

Take care. Thanks again,

Gregg
