It is blue-ish. When you dilute it with water to make the 50/50 mix it gets more translucent and maybe a little more on the green side. But it never looks like Prestone green.

Just make sure you're looking at coolant and not a bottle of windshield washer fluid. ;)

Yep, Volvo coolant is blue and sometimes looks the same color as Windex. I take it that you are the original owner. Otherwise, you're taking it at the previous owner's word that the car was ONLY serviced by the dealer and never by an independent mechanic.

I ordered my coolant from carquest and they gave me a bottle of orange Motul coolant. I needed it quickly and I definitely trust the name so I put it in anyway, but I would have preferred Volvo coolant. I can definitely say that the water that came out of my water pump was green to though.

+1

Distilled is best. Tap adds all kinds of other chemicals to the solution.

+1 Always distilled. It only costs a buck or two and I only want the best for my baby  ;)

No i am not the original owner I just bought the car never talked to the owner but got 17 pages of records from the dealer. guy was super anal. but yes i am looking at coolant not windshield washer fluid I am a mechanic not a tard. I just wasnt sure if maybe back in the day the coolant was green and then volvo changed it to blue at some point. anyways always use distilled water! i guess i will be doing a super water flush before i put in the volvo blue to make sure they dont mix. shmerr no of any negative effects of this. If you use the wrong stuff on a GM it isnt good.

Yes the volvo coolant was green few years ago and they switched to a blue coolant. I had bought some originally to top off the coolant on my car. When I started to service my car myself and use the old container alongside a new one, I noticed the difference of color. I am the original owner, so I may have had the old container for 5 years or more, I don't really remember.

You need to use distilled water for all coolants or the minerals will damage the system and yes its blue ...kinda weird

Cool Thanks bud.

distilled. regular water corrodes because all of the added crap.
Correction. No crap is added that would cause corrosion, only the dissolved minerals naturally found in regular water would cause corrosion, so distilling is removing what is naturally present. What is added is Fluoride, Ammonia, Chlorine, and other chemicals to prevent the growth of microbes...tasty.

While looking up approved coolant a while back, I've heard a lot of suggestion for Zerex G-05 as it's compatible with Volvo's coolant system. I've bought some for myself and I've had no problems. It comes concentrated and pre-mixed.

Oh my bad on that one i just no the minerals cause corrosion and the distilled doesn't have them. thought they added more to the water haha im a dummy.

Zerex G-05 is a hybrid type coolant which is the correct type to use in most Volvo's.
Many other brands are produced which are long life and hybrid organic also and quite ok to use.
The correct specifications should refer to hybrid organic but the colors are much more varied now in modern coolants and less relevant than previously required.
Important - Do not mix a hybrid organic coolant with a normal organic type coolant.

I have an 04 V70R that has been at the dealer it whole life and my coolant is green. I am about to do the timing belt and water pump and just got volvo coolant and it looks blue WTF??
Blue is long life volvo oem. The only higher quality long life coolant available is the pink mercedes coolant.

Green is generic shiddy glycol available at every pep boys etc. Some say it doesnt matter what u use as long as you change the stuff but fact is after 20k the high quality long life coolant is so much easier on alum heads, water pumps and heater core.

Ya I was gonna say. I have of had a couple bottles of volvo coolant and it's green. Blue must be new
