Pretty sure it's been shown that the stock intake works really well and anything aftermarket really only gives more noise and placebo-like gains.

You're forgetting the biggest reason you should use when looking at replacing the air box.

"Do I want to have heaps of space in the engine bay? Do I want easy access to the oil filter?"

That's the only reason why I did it.

I got my intake for the noise and the fact that I don't have to remove a bunch of stuff to change the oil. Throttle response improved, but an ECU spacer will give you that.
The only bit difference I've noticed with the intake has been since I got a tune.

You're not going to get far with tuning a 2.4i. So the intake is really just a cosmetic piece visually and audibly.

I like to hear the sound of my Ferrita exhaust, not the sound of the intake. And my Volvo mechanic never complained about having trouble accessing the filter. :D

Seriously, I prefer well filtered air and in my opinion only stock filter guarantees that.

That's because they're trained and paid to work on stock Volvos ;)

Start doing your own oil changes ;) I cut or bruised my hand every time I attempted to remove the filter with the stock box in. Plus, it was a hassled to to remove the the 90° plastic pipe every time too. You'd think Volvo would have made the filters easier to access in these cars. Oil filter used to be a pain, the cabin filter is a huge pain, fuel filter (on some models) requires removing the the fuel tank and other components, even the two long screws on the air filter is a bigger hassle than older Volvo models had.

this is why baskin robbins has 31 flavors of ice cream. to each their own. I could only afford an EST exhaust so i like the sound of intake. ballers that can Ferrita their whips have no cause. ;)

Nah, he is certified Volvo mech and he does all the work on my car, from Quaife LSD install to oil change. He is also my friend so I prefer watching him do it and than we go eat something on my account. ;)

Of course, to each their own. But don't try to make a snob out of me cause I'm not - I simply wouldn't like my engine breath like Darth Vader. ;)

Well, if we consider it that way... Darth Vader gets me hard.

Yes, I believe so. I wouldn't expect it to make any difference on 2.4i.
Even on the T5, let's be honest, the gains are due to be minimal.

On the T5, at least, oil changes are pretty easy with the stock intake. Even when I removed the air box to change my PCV I didn't see what all the fuss is about. I think these are just ratioanlizations, personally. If I needed to work on my car frequently enough to where that was an issue, I think I'd have bigger concerns.

I've got pipes on my Harley - and they're not to keep it running cool, or let motorists know there is a cycle in their midst. And the rwo-chambers on my Duster aren't for MPG. All of those benefits are there, but my wife can see through the BS, so I just go with the real reasons.

+1. If you buy the $10 filter wrench, access is not a problem and after a few DIY oil changes, the intake snorkel is easy to deal with :)
