Here is the problem I am having with DICE and VIDA.

Turn up the volume on this video to hear the the sounds on this video.

2001 S80 T6
Ebay Volvo DICE
VIDA 2012A Clean install of Windows 7 Pro Service Pack 1(after DoD wipe of hard drive)

DICE communication test passed and is running firmware 5.6.1 (it was flashed from the previous version).

Notice the status lights on DICE and how DICE connects and disconnects from the laptop. When the camera is on the speedometer, you can hear a click from behind the dashboard.

I've tried running DICE and VIDA with the car in accessory on, then in position I (ignition on),and with the car running with the same result shown in the video. Notice when the laptop is shown no voltage reading is shown in the upper right of the VIDA screen. I was able to use VIDA and DICE about 4 times prior to this without any problems.

Does anybody know what's wrong?

Hopefully someone has an answer.

Turn off the sound on your PC, it is annoying, and not necessary. The lights indicate the DiCE is communicating with the car.

I notice that you haven't gone past vehicle profile. Click on "define vehicle profile", then you see in the upper left a Communication Tool drop down box that often says "not selected" click on that drop down, and then choose your device: DiCE-206751. At that point, it will read your car, and give you your VIN number, and what you have to do, at least sometimes, is define the transmission, and then click OK on the right side of the screen. Then you can go to the diagnostics tab and see what is up with your car.

You have to have the key in position II to read the car with the DiCE unit (I is accessory, II is ignition on, III is start position) Clicking from the car is not unusual, ignore it, get the VIDA set up to recognize the DiCE unit first. Did I say TURN OFF the ^*#@ sound on your computer? It adds nothing, except distraction.

the sound from the computer makes me believe that the driver isnt recognizing your dice, try installing it on a different usb plug. you may have to delete the driver from your pc and reinstall it to make it work.

but first step would be to unplug it and plug the dice into a different usb slot.

.. didnt realize this was an old post, hope its been resolved?

Hi All; new here and hopping onto this thread cause I couldn't see where to make a new topic within this category.

Anyway, I purchased a new Vida knockoff and am having trouble loading software onto a laptop computer.

What operating system (Windows version) is best?

What processor speed works for you (dual core quad core etc.)?

Thank you in advance!

What version of vida do you have?

Windows 7 64 bit works fine with that version of vida. What issues are you having?

Did Volvo declare war on some DiCE units?

There seems to be a growing worldwide problem with DiCE units numbered 206751.

The affected DiCE units somehow lose/forget their number/name! 206751 somehow gets changed to 000000, causing windoze to not recognize the 'new' (unknown, never seen before) device (name) when it is connected.

If one then installs USB driver for DiCE-000000 (so windoze will know what it is, and how to talk to it), then the only obvious remaining new problem is that VIDA misbehaves slightly. The most prominent VIDA visual misbehavior is that it no longer displays battery voltage or ignition key position. All of this catches people (who've previously successfully used their units repeatedly) by surprise because, as the OP said, the failure seemingly occured between uses, while the unit was not connected to anything: everything had been working fine, time after time, and then one time when the USB was plugged in, suddenly the hardware was no longer recognized...!

This seems to be a world wide 2013 mystery. see http://mhhauto.com/Thread-DiCE-000000-problem 2001S80T6's is the oldest indication of this issue I've seen.

I suspect the possibility that Volvo('s software) is being willfully destructive, and that, under certain conditions, some newer VIDAs (since 2012A?) could be causing the number/name of some DiCEs to become unexpectedly and undesirably changed to zeros. It seems that the world is still mostly in the dark regarding the precise cause (and cure?) of this widespread (and growing?) mysterious hardware ailment.

Is Volvo('s software) maliciously damaging some people's private property??? (IF so, then the device's number/name apparently can be changed and re-written via the USB port, which suggests that an un-re-write utility program could be developed, perhaps one that could even re-assign some number other than 206751 [I'm guessing that that's at least a part of how a malicious VIDA could decide to 'attack'...], so perhaps VIDA would not attack it again in the future?)

FYI, I've emailed OEMscan's world-famous Yolanda, and she has provided no worthy answers regarding the cause or cure regarding this mysterious world-wide malady; her only solution is to 'just' ship any functional-but-renamed DiCE hardware back for repair/replacement if it is still under warranty.

The DiCE uses a Renesas M32C/85 microprocessor which has internal flash memory. This flash memory is used for storage of the firmware image along with device specific configuration data. Flash block 1 is used to store, among other things, the serial number and the bluetooth id of the particular DiCE. If you're getting all zero's when the DiCE is connected to your computer then it's likely the contents of flash block 1 have been erased.

This can happen under unusual conditions, I've caused it once by adding a bluetooth card to a clone DiCE. If you happen to cut power to the DiCE when it's in the middle of rewriting block 1 then you can end up with an erased block. In my case it was likely recreating block 1 with the bluetooth id when I turned it off.

One of the other pieces of data stored in block 1 is a "flight recorder" of DiCE hardware failures. When the software detects there is something wrong with the hardware it logs it in block 1. Again, if you cut the power when the log is full and it needs to rewrite block 1 you can end up with an empty block 1.

I'd be inclined to blame the crap clone hardware rather than malicious DiCE firmware. The DiCE is recoverable if you have a programmer for the M32C/85 and know the programming key, if one has been set.

Tohoto rozšířeného (a rostoucího) záhadného hardwarového onemocnění.
