Hello everyone. New 2005 S60R owner here. Question concerning oil consumption. I've had my R now for about 4 weeks. It has 56,000 miles on it. Vehicle appears in perfect condition, runs and drives perfectly. After purchase and after about 300 miles, I noticed the low oil indicator came on. In checking dipstick found oil to be 1 quart low. Figured this may have just been low upon purchase. I put a quart in, and now after about another 500 miles, the low oil indicator came on again, and the dipstick shows 1 quart low. I've seen no leaking at all from underneath the vehicle, no exhaust smoke at all, no black stuff around tail pipes, nothing. Obviously not normal to consume 2 quarts of oil in under 1000 miles, so wondering if anyone has any ideas? We have had severe hot weather for the past few weeks (high 90's to over 100). Could it be using oil just because of the high temperatures? I'm taking to the local Volvo dealer next week to get checked out while it is still under the used car warranty period, so hopefully will get some answers then -my fear though is prompting my post...thank you for any thoughts...

Check your PCV system out. I was losing about 2qt every 1,500 miles and had my PCV system changed and haven't had any oil loss since. Also check your oil seal in the cap. I think turbo cars tend to consume more oil also but I could be wrong.

Common issue with poor quality oil. Drain the oil and replace with Castrol GTX.
FAIL. This car should NEVER. EVER. UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES have conventional oil in it.

My oil was the euro castrol syth 0-W30, hardly a cheap oil and it was still losing it. I don't think it's an oil quality issue.

Go synth. Less oil in America's crankcases means more oil for the tank! :p:p

Oh crap I meant Syntec. I have no idea why I said GTX. Definitely don't use anything other than full synthetic in these cars. Sorry bout the mixup.
Even the syntec I wouldn't trust the Euro Castrol AKA Black Castrol is like Cocaine for these cars. Instant mod after a few changes.

When I got my R, which was about 4.5 weeks ago they told me it had synthetic in it. They lied. I did an oil change w/ castrol syntec 5w-30 and these are the results I got. Oil quality makes a BIG difference in these engines. It took me 2 weeks to burn enough oil for the low oil indicator to come on after i bought it and I know it was full because I topped it up. It has only been 1.5 weeks since I did my oil change so im not sure if im still loosing oil but based on more consistant performance alone the change was well worth it. I will be addressing my PCV system next as well, just for good measure. Might want to head over to the TRD forums if this info doesnt help *coff*pics*coff*

Thank you everyone for the comments. I think I may just change the oil to be safe - I honestly have no idea what oil the dealer put in it, so I guess to be safe I will change out to synthetic. Hopefully the dealer will check everything else out (including PCV system) to make sure there are no issues. If I still go through a quart every 500 miles, I think this might be a short-lived R experience....Any thoughts on whether to use 5W-30 or 10W-30? Temps are fluctuating right now but are looking to stay between 85-95 over the next week or so. Is draining oil in these things easy? Looks like there is a shield covering everything underneath...

Similar problem started when I switched from using Mobil 1 for the first 90K miles to Castrol Syntec. Same weights - 5W/30. Consumption with Castrol went up dramatically. Switched back to Mobil 1 and went to 10W/40 on mechanic's advice. Much less oil used. Mechanic said very normal for our cars to burn 1 quart every 1-1.5K miles.

I've used castrol syntec (5w30), mobil 1 (5w30 and 0w40), amsoil (5w40) and redline (5w30) in my VR (66k miles) and it has never used more than 0.5-0.75 quart over a 5000 mile oil change interval. 1 quart every 1-1.5k miles is not normal.

Mystery SOLVED! Had the R at the dealer today - they diagnosed the problem as the turbocharger going bad. Needs replaced to the tune of......$2440! Ouch! Contacted the dealer where I bought it to let them know they have a warranty claim - hopefully will not have any issues with that....hard to believe that a turbo with only 56K miles on it could go bad, but I guess I have no idea how the previous owners took care it... Oh well, at least now I know the cause of the oil consumption. Thanks for all the posts...
