When did you guys do your first oil change, and when you did do it, did you use synthetic oil?

Re: long trip (JimLill)

I just did my first change at 3500 miles to Mobil 1. used it for ten years or so with turbo & non turbo cars, no complaints.

OIL CHANGE - DIY

Need help.

1. Anyone have a specific web link to pictures demonstrating location of the
oil filter and oil plug and steps in changing/replacing your oil fiter yourself? Or could anyone post pics? Do we need a special tool to remove the oil plug?

I found this link to older volvo series
http://cvolvo.com/Central/Repair/B5254T.html
is this pretty much the same for the S60R?

2. Anybody that has performed their own oil change, have you gone with
any aftermarket oil filter such as the ones listed on the FAQs link page
http://www.r-series.org/oilfilter.html

3. What do you think about aftermarket oil filters versus Volvo OEM filter.

4. Do you think filters offered on these web pages (for example)
http://vo-parts.drivewire.com/....html
http://www.autopartsworld.com/....html
http://www.ipdusa.com/Products...D=629

are OK? (They are listed as MANN oil filter, cartridge insert type)

The price is $5.00 - $10.00 versus going to some local shops where they
tell me they can't get a volvo oil filter for less than $30-$50 for the S60R

Thanks

Re: OIL CHANGE - DIY (g-s)

g-s, all good questions. Looking under the car, all the parts seem to be in the same places as the pics for the 1999 S60/V70. I was also wanting to know how to replace the oil, and of course manuals these days don't tell the owner much about service except when to take the thing to an authorized dealer.

ChuckB -- Just curious how you came to know that the factory fill is that Castrol type? I'm not doubting it, but just curious how you know (also I didn't notice the Volvo R at the site linked). We had gone through at least a couple threads with people wondering what the factory fill is & postulating, so ... please tell!

Since all service intervals for '04's are free, why go through all this?
If you want to change it (the oil) every 3500 miles (good idea), a honest dealer shouldn't charge more than about $30.
So, IMO, it's not worth the effort and the oil change will go into the permanent service record of the car.

Yup, my dealer charges a reasonable fee for a change with non-synthetic oil. They overcharge for the Mobil 1 but will let me bring in my own in the future (they charged $60 for the changing service using Mobil 1).

I know it's easier to let the dealer do it. And I'll definitely have the dealer do it for the regular intervals so it's documented for the warranty. I want to try doing it myself to start familiarizing myself with the things in there. It's a very small step, yes. Adding to that, it also takes quite a while to schedule an oil change, plus the hassle of waiting at the dealer or getting on the shuttle. I think they don't offer a loaner for oil changes.

I have a contact at VCNA who asked Hans (Hasse) Nilsson.

Thanks for the tribological confirmation. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Doesn't appear that Castrol blend is available in the U.S. and I liked it because it was nice & clear. I'm thinking it'd be easy to tell good from bad with that, and it's obviously good enough with Volvo for 7500 mi of break-in, which I'd think is the roughest part of the engine's lifespan.
