17 inch

Hey CDADOC, Im in Canada (BC) and given that my XC90 r design has a pretty hard to find tire size 255 50 19(and costly best quote I have gotten in 329 a tire) and Im actually considering on changing my wheel to a 17inch base and fit it with more on/off road capable tires since I like the hankooks you have or even Bridgestone duelers or Nitto Terra Graplers just for the winter.. Wonder how this is working out for you? Did you have any issues with your XC90 break size or balancing? What tire size do you have now with your 17 wheels?
I was worried about this at first. As it turns out, 17 inch wheels clear everything without a problem. Look for some used wheels locally. I bought some "Neptunes" I believe. You may even make up the cost on the first tire purchase. (vs. 19 inch tires alone) I run 235/65-17 Bridgestone Blizzak snow tires. No troubles with balancing either. One unexpected benefit has been ride comfort. The 19 inch sport wheels/tires tend to produce a bruising ride. The 17 inch combo is much "softer" in comparison.

I did a bit of research on this topic for some winter trend on my 2010 Saab 9-5 2.8T, XDW. I'm in Northern VA (west of Dulles Int. Airport). We average about 23 inches of snow per year BUT can range from 0-75 inches during any given year. I wanted a tire that's good in all condition but excels in snow traction and ice braking. The tires are going on 18 in rims (245/45/18). I wanted a performance winter tire - not an all-season tire. I narrowed it down to 4 tires: (1) Nokian WR G2, (2) Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3, (3) Verdestein WinterTrac Xtreme, (4) Dunlop SF Wintersport 3D.

Ultimately I selected the Verdesteins. They are a bit unknown in the U.S. but the reviews have been very strong and CR scored it as good or better in all categories (2010 test). I'm having them mounted on Thursday and will provide feedback about the tires in the future.

Drove from NYC to Ottawa and back last night and today.

Blizzard conditions from Syracuse to 1000 Island Bridge. Nokian WR G2 combine with the superb electronics of the XC90 were unbelieveable. Was able to do 70 mph safely in new snow and the tires are only at 40% tread left. Kept passing the plows. So convincing that I ordered four more Nokes for the next 25K. Very highly recommended.

having done that drive many times in snow, I can second your experience, the nokian dealer I believe used to be on Burnett ave.

slow down, it can be deceiving !

Last Friday I drive from Croatian coast (Pula town) to Slovenia and in the middle of travel start snowing so much. No time to go further with summer tires even if Slovenia clean roads so good. I stop in town Ljubljana and put PIRELLI Scorpion Snow & Ice 235/60/18' and the next few hours country was white...
continue snowing incredible...I was driving without any problems happy with new tires. After passing Slovenia to Croatia until Serbia was raining and tires at snow and water surface was so good, quiet and griped so much. Thanks to all forum friends for suggestion. I was waiting to buy Nokian but too late.
The law say 15.November all cars must have winter S + M tires and chains in reserve.

Just bare in mind you can now go when you should probably stay home. Overall I'm very happy with the Pirelli's and with the W button I often times feel invincible. That is until you hit a tight roundabout that's covered in greasy slush and the moose heads directly for the curb. Or your state (known for it's black ice) decides to save 20 millions and not salt the interstates anymore.

I went with the Nokian WRG2, very happy with them in all conditions.
