Hey guys I'm new here and was wondering what you think about the S60R? Good/ bad How reilable are they? I will be new to volvo. I have a Grand Prix GXP now and need something else as I have spent a small fortune keeping it on the road. I love the way the S60R looks. I have read about the awd failing and the slave cylinder failing also but thats about it. It will be a few months before I will be able to buy one since I'm still in college but want to know if I should further my search for one or walk away. The will saty mostly stock maybe a tune, exhasut, lowered that would be it. I know that ever used car has problems as I bought one and had to replace the trans no more than a week later. I would really appreciate any help you could give me.

Thanks,
Brandyn

Love my S60R, going from a grand prix you will too... Sure cars eventually develope problems but find one with a service history, and or well taken care of and you will be set. It seems like you have done your research already and utilized the Forum, so you are off to a good start to say the least.

You're asking an R-inspired forum what we think about the R? ;)
Biased opinions aside, it's a great car. It may cost you money, it may not. Some of us have been extremely fortunate to have to only pony up the $$ for minor wear and tear items while others have had to spend thousands and thousands for drivetrain related items. It's the luck of the draw.

That being said, everyone that drives one or rides in one absolutely loves it. It's far from a boring car.
To add to what Kyle said, 99% of the issues have been addressed on this forum with a resolution of some sort, so don't be afraid to use the search function or to ask someone for help if you can't find what you're looking for. Good luck!

I have read a few threads on here that you have put some good advice in. I have ran across the awd, struts, slave cylinder and the noise it makes when it rains and stuff. What should I expect to pay for a lower miles S60R? I have been looking and they range from $12- $25k in the Atlanta area. How is the manual over the auto or vise versa? Thanks for the quick response

The 06-07 GTs have the same amount of torque as the manuals, so it comes down to preference. Most people driving in the city prefer the GT. I, personally, don't really know how to drive an automatic, so I prefer the 6MT. :D

I'm guessing the GT it the auto version right?
Yes, it refers to the auto trans. GT = Gear-Tronic (i think one word, but who knows).
Ha, I came to Volvo from a Grand Prix as well...get an R! (but have it checked out first by someone that knows R's)

I have a loaded 06' V8 model grand prix and I love it but spend more time fixing it than anything enjoying it. Since you came from a grand prix is it like night and day difference or what?
Night and day is a pretty good comparison, yes. That said, you're Grand Prix was a lot better than mine. I was in '95 with the standard V6, and I went to an '03 S60 2.4T from there. Even that was night and day. Then stepped up to the R, which was also night and day. Many days, many nights...stoked. Was just toting a visiting family member around California. He's an Acura guy and was really impressed with the R. He's now in the market ;)

I have always liked the R but could never afford one till now. I have encountered a stock R on the street once and I don't even need to tell you the result. I would like to find a MT R but from my search of for sale ones there are not many.

^ Lol! GT redefined.

I personally have driven both and I am just a 6 speed MT kind of guy. However I did not want to rule it out so I test drove an 07 GT as well. It was still very impressive and fun to drive. I live and work in town, but spend a good bit of time out in the country and the back roads beg for the MT.

Other than choice of trans try to find one that has a good history, have it looked over by a legitimated volvo familiar mechanic, etc. I absolutely have no regrets purchasing mine.

You did the unthinkable in your pants?
haha no but it did pull on me pretty hard. I am more of a MT guy to but if I can't find one I guess I will have to settle for the auto. which brings me to my next question the auto has either the regular auto and where you can select what gear right? If I am correct in that statement how are the auto's in regard to that function? I mean do they break easy if you drive it hard?

If you go with a GT 06+ were better from what I have read. Mainly due to no torque limiting in the first 2 gears. I have read other minor issues, but don't remember all the years and details. It was nothing that would have kept me from buying one. For the most part they seem to handle even a tuned and modded set up very well. I beat the snot out of the one I drove as my friend is one of the managers my local dealership and went with me on the ride. Very fun, shifted great in auto and the manual shift was pretty cool. Responds much faster than other cars I have driven with similar setups. But again I will leave the GT answers to those that have them and are more familiar.

Ok thanks I have the same setup in my car and it is terrible on the trans. People have to replace them all the time and its not very quick shifts. Thank You everyone that has posted you have been a big help.

Never settle. Life is too short. /inspirational statement

I have never driven a R with a GT, but those that have it seem to be pretty happy with the reaction time in manual gear changes. That said, my '03 2.4T was an auto with the manual gear selection option. I wasn't very happy with the reaction time to manual gear changes in that car - much lag. I doubt it is the same transmission as that in the R (someone more informed, please chime-in here), and I'm pretty sure Volvo improved it since my 03 non-R. If you're a manual guy, hold out and find one...they're out there. I don't mean to ignite another MT vs GT post war, just saying if you know you like it, have patience if you aren't in dire need of a new car - don't settle.

I love my Girl Tronic and I pee standing up, thank you very much.

I love the MT too.

I just love the R.
