Sudden loss power, runs ruff, dies, backfires...need help

Ok I have done some searching...but still having a issue with the T5.

Have no upgrades or mods to the engine. Stock exhause, 2004.5 Volvo S40 T5.

Car started running ruff a few months ago. Pulled in garage replaced everything from plugs to oil, and cleaned all the sensors.

What its doing is it runs fine, then all of a sudden it losses power. Most times it does not die, however last week it died after about 40miles of driving (its St. Louis so its hot and humid) car sat for 20-25min then started up. Next day same thing. Since then it has not happened again, however it will loose power, floor it and after a few seconds power is back and Im going.

Yesterday was sitting at buddies house in park and car started running ruff. Gave it a little gas, backfired, then ran normal again.

I know there was a recall on the PEM so I did take it in a few weeks ago to get it replaced. But I dont think that is my issue. No Check engine light.

So let me hear your ideas! Local Volvo Dealer is 58 miles from my house...so its a last resort for me. And the car has 72,000 miles on it.

Sounds like my sister's Jetta when it needed a new MAF sensor. It was quite jerky and felt like no power, then it would jump to life, shudder and lose power. Just a thought.

Thought about the MAF. Read somewhere to disconnect it, then start the car. If I dont notice a difference at a start then the MAF is bad. I did that and noticed no change.

Is this a true test or someone posting crap? Is there a good test (or site) to test the MAF?

Mine never died but had a bit of rough hesitation, I bought some MAF cleaner (forgot the brand) and cleanded the hot film the hesitation went away. Worth the $6 to see if it helps you out. But typically if you disconect the MAF and drive it you should notice and difference in the drive response if it is the culprit. If you have a mutimeter available you can check the votage at the plug to make sure you are getting the correct voltage to it.

Alright I will disconnect it and take it for a spin tomorrow and see how it feels. Ill let you know if there is a difference. Just know sitting at park there was no difference...

I know nothing about this specific problem than its name, but it's called "Start, Stutter, Stall" or SSS, which sounds like what's happening to you, so look it up - can't hurt.

If it's your problem, I think it's a software fix, from glancing this thread:

I thought SSS was just something that happens when you start the car. The car does not stall out after a start. The Back-fire thing was new...but I thought that backfire was caused by the engine running too lean? (why it could point to a MAF)

The one time it stalled I had driven 35 miles, it was 80 degrees out, and was on the highway. Was slowing down around 45mph then then it just died. Tried starting it and it just cranked. After 20-25min it started up like nothing was wrong.
Took it to Volvo and had the PEM replaced

Next day wife drove it 20miles, then let it rest for a hour (shopping) then drove it 10miles (had lunch) then drove it 5miles on a country road. Car just died while coasting. Sat for 20-25min then started up like nothing was wrong.

Most times it just feels like its going to die while driving. I floor it and after a couple seconds it comes back to life.

This cold be your problem, certaily cheap if it is. I had similar issues and thought it might be the TCV. I was wrong, when installing the boost gauge i saw fluctuating boost pressures, or none at all. First thing i checked was the gauge but it worked perfectly. Strange this line isnt held in place by something..

So I had time finaly to unplug the MAF and take a drive.....felt no difference from when it was plugged in and not plugged in. Only difference is the Check engine light came on with it unplugged.

If the MAF is bad, would'nt the check engine light come on?

Car died again today......one thing I have noticed is when the AC is on is when I have the issues. Ran for a week with no issues, today driving with AC on and it had issues. After car died today took 5min before it would start up!

Friend said Crank Shaft Position Sensor might be bad, or there is a heat sensor on the AC compressor that might be bad?

Any ideas?

You need to bite the bullet and pull the Volvo codes at the dealer. It could be something simple (bad fuel pressure sender, overheated ECU, marginal coil pack, etc), but fishing for these will be hell.

Did you mention this issue when they did the PEM work? Did they check it over then?

I Wonder what would happen If You Sprayed some MAF - Cleaner Down

that Vacuum Line - Toward the TVC Valve Behind Engine
( Just a Small Squirt ) - to see If that Gets - Gluu -Out of the TVC Valve
then Run It around and then a Small Squirt of - Light Spray Oil - Same Spot .

About 5 - 10 min. apart - I can't believe We have this many TVC valves going on these Cars .

But If We did a Count on SS , It has to be around 15 - 20 TVC's .

Ya I mentioned the issue they said oh its the PEM well replace it and you should be fine. Im thinking I need to drive the extra 20miles and to go anouther shop

Sounds like your car is running really rich. Check all the sensors that control the A/F mixture... MAF, coolant sensor, IAT (if these cars have one), O2 sensor. Maybe this could also be of some help:

ya try cleaning the MAF sensor with the MAF cleaner and you may want to check the fuel rail senor. I had one go bad on my old mustang and cause studdering and bad idle. Other than that you may want to check all vaccum lines and possibly the o2 sensors(they do control how the car runs and the may be gummed up). These are the simple things I can suggest.

Most of the Sensors will Give a Code the TVC - Turbo Control valve

Does - NOT !

O2 will give a Code , I had a Dirty MAF , It did Clean Up , but didn't
have What You - describe .

I also Add that Not to Long Ago another TVC on another Volvo gave some Issues and Some Folks , put an In-Line High Flow Filter with 12" of Extra Line Running in a Up Ward Loop , so - POOGG - couldn't get to the
TVC valve and that Person has Never had another Issue with the TVC !

So a Simple Cleaning Out and a Little Light Oil , Might be Worth a Try .

It also Seems that the Fuel Rail Senor is a Little - Frail !
That Should Throw a Code , It also Seems these Items Go in Tamdem
Like a Stack of Cards.

Sticky TVC Valve - Over Works the O2 , Which Over Works the Fuel Sensor , Which Stresses the ECU & Instant - PEM - LOL
