Re: Wheel Options at DISCOUNT TIRE and misc ramblings (BarryH)

With luck like your having BarryH, you need to go out and buy a lottery ticket.

Sweet!

Only $142 for a 17" wheel and better yet, I can take my car to their shop and see the rims fitted in-person. Thanks for the link!

No problem. You'll have to post pictures if you find and purchase a rim you like.

With regard to Discount Tires after clicking on the above link or going
there on your own -- You have to set your own Region.

As I said, if you want to see 17" rims you'll HAVE TO CHOOSE A DIFFERENT MODEL. AND they are listed under model year 2003 as only
the R is under 2004.

Under the 18" RIMS that supposedly Fit, there's a nice 6-spoke and
a nice 5-spoke wheel.

Enkei RS6 $162 special 18" Rim

Enkei RS5 $164 18" Rim

The following looks nice but but is "NOT LISTED" for the R

Fondmetal 6500 $152 17" Rim

Voxx FA $60! 17" Rim

Voxx MGR $70 17" RIM -- Someone listed this as being compatible but I'm not so keen on its look in the picture

Too bad they didn't test clearances for the 17" Rims.

Hello:
Snowed here in Ct. already--about an inch which fortunately quickly dissipated. Thank goodness, as my plow is yet to be mounted, though not on the R. Does anyone have an aftermarket 17" rim that fits yet? I have seen a large number of pictures and stories of Maybe, might, could fits, but not any reports of true on the car fits. Please post it when you get it. TR still has only one rim listed, a $200 item which doesn't really put you any further ahead than stock at $250. Thanks for all.

Re: (rmolk)

Does anyone know if I'd be able to fit a 215 tire on the 8" wide stock 17s?? Would it be to small to run correctly? I'm looking to get a more narrow tire for the winter season, but with the wheel being at 8 inches I'm not sure if my chooses are limited to 225 and up. Thanks...

Hello and a mild chiding:
A bunch of people have posted about how they were going to go to DT or elsewhere, or about how they are in constant email connection to a tire and wheel supply house, and yet no one has posted a tried and true wheel for the V70R or S60R yet. Where are you guys? If you have a replacement wheel that fits, let us all know, PLEASE! Otherwise, the $257 Pegasus in 17in size with the 10% discount for Volvo club seems to be the best answer. Let's share what we know and grab some snows to grab some snow, as it is undoubtedly on the way.

Re: (rmolk)

I just ordered a set of 4 Yokohama Guardex F721 (215/50/17) with Enkei RS5 wheels from http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/home.jsp. The cost including mounting, balancing and shipping was $1,249.00. I spoke with Shawn at 800-589-6789 ext. 423 about the fit. The website only lists 18" tire wheel combination for the S60R but I was assured these will clear the brakes.

They are due to arrive early next week. I will let you know if they fit.

The Tire Rack has a Mille Miglia Action Wheel (17x8) that they say will fit and will be available by 11/08. This wheel with Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50 215/50/17 runs @ $1,365.00 depending on shipping costs.

Re: (rmolk)

I'm going to Discount Tire on Thursday to get fitted with Enkei CDR9 17" rims. They are $140 each and they are including mounting, balancing, and swapping out rims in the price, even though I bought Vredesteins elsewhere.

I will post after Thursday with confirmation that these rims worked out. DT did not charge me up-front for the rims and will not charge me if they don't fit.

After an ugly rain/snow day with 45mph winds, I'm thinking more about the snows. It did seem like my tires were harder (is it just me?) at slower speeds. Didn't notice it at higher speeds today, but city streets felt much more rocky...

It's not just you, I drove my R to work today and the stick wasn't there, it takes much more to get the tires warm. And it was only 39 F. It's not as much fun in the cold wet rain as in the warm summer rains.

Re: (rmolk)

Rich,

Just got back from Discount Tire. Wheels look great. I got the Enkei CDR9 rims. Only glitch is that they needed a wheel kit (or something like that)...basically the lug bolts on the R are too big for the holes on the new rims. The kit was about $40, but I think he threw it in for free. Wheels were $140 each, kit was $40, and he mounted, balanced, and swapped out my Pegasus rims for free. Out the door including tax was $617 (he did give me a price break, since I had to come back again today for the wheel kit). And he said he would swap them out for me again in the Spring at no charge.

Rims look great, Vreds aren't as nice as the P-Zeros, but they are quiet for snows.

I told the Manager, Mike Mockbee, that he might get a couple customers out of this, or at least some calls from curious R owners.

His number is 952.898.2399.

Edit: These were 17" rims; DT website only shows 18", but the 17" fit, at least for this particular rim.

Re: (Pegleg)

Hey Bob those should look really nice on your R. It won't be long and the snows will come in handy.

Re: (rmolk)

Anyone know if the Nokian WR's come in 235x40x18 XL size? I went to the Nokian website (US) and they were only listed in 225x40x18 XL size. I thought someone on this board had purchased them in the 235 size with the XL rating?

Am I dreaming?

MAc,
I just ordered the 225/45/17s Nokian WRs for my S60R. I went with a smaller width tire b/c you don't want huge slicks during snow. Just a consideration for you instead of 235s. I would look at 225 as a viable, cheaper, and possibly better snow performing size.

Re: (Turbome)

I bought my Vredesteins in the narrower size as welll.

I recall that the R owners manual recommends this size, presumably for the reason you stated. Given this fact I was a little surprised that more people haven't gone this route.

And as you indicated it has the added bonus of being slightly cheaper.

Re: (djeuch)

All of the Vredestein Wintrac V tires are XL load rated according to their website. My 225's show "extra load" on the side and I assume this equates to XL.

Hope I'm not misinterpreting something here.
