My wife and I are beginning to see more and more XC90s on the road. As of yesterday, the count is up to 4. Once we get to 10 we may stop counting...as we see more of them out there, we are kindof curious as to the age of the average xc90 driver...I don't mean to get too personal, but just curious to know...

Re: Average age of XC90 drivers? (4Noah)

From the volvo website

XC90 Buyers

XC90 buyers will be around 46 years old. A majority of them will most likely be married with a median income around $175,000. About 40 percent of them will already own three or more other cars and more than half, 57 percent, will be women.

Competitive Group

The mid-size premium SUVs the XC90 will compete with are the Acura MDX, the Mercedes-Benz ML350, the Lexus RX 330 and the BMW X5 3.0i.

Re: Average age of XC90 drivers? (4Noah)

The number of votes is not yet too big, but already we can see a majority in the 31-35 range.
My personnal interpretation :
That's around this age that you can start to afford such car....(you went to university, started to work bit later than others but with higher salary)....and this is in combination with having kids bit later too......such car would allow to provide room and security for your baby's and/or small kids.
Your opinion ?

Re: Average age of XC90 drivers? (zebulon)

Most buyers will be 35+ - 50, with the majority in the 40'ish range

The USA & North America as a whole is the largest market for Volvo accross the board. Sweden is #2.

After 50 most do not have a need for such a large vehicle!

Re: Average age of XC90 drivers? (zebulon)

Although this survey is fun, I believe Volvo's numbers are most likely more accurate.

This survey doesn't take into account the majority of Volvo owners who log on to Swedespeed most likely represent the younger end of the spectrum of Volvo owners. Online surveys asking for age almost always produce younger results then surveys sent in the mail.

Re: (khanh)

The age bias point has already been made, which is why the official Volvo stats are more reliable in this instance. I just turned 30 and have loved Volvo's from a far for a while. I think they're doing a better job of appealing to the younger set.

Have you guys seen the commercial for the S60R? It's HOT!!!

VCNA did a good job by hiring the right ad agency to create that spot.

I agree! http://********************/smile/emthup.gif I never cared much for the `brick' look until Volvo redesigned the bodies and gave them a sleeker look that is more than befitting the lineage!

Re: (1sttimevolvo)

Once they diverged from the boxy image I started looking at them. The new s-80 caught my eye first. Ultimately bought an XC90, hopefully it will be a good experience and I'll be buying a new S40 or another XC90/XC50 to replace our commuting car. The next Volvo will definitely be through the TDS program and I'll wait until I can get the hefty discount off MSRP with a fabulous travel add on package

60%+ so far of the poll respondents are 36+, however not a scientific poll

Re: (zebulon)

Sorry, Zebulon, I'm 30 and already voted. I don't think we can "win" on this one...Volvo's (like most $30K+ cars) will skew older just from a cost standpoint.

Frankly though, I'm shocked that the "median" household income is $175,000. If my statistics course doesn't fail me, median means half of Volvo owners are from households w/ OVER $175K. I find that very hard to believe, and I live in region of the country with some of the highest salaries in the country.

I agree. I was surprised to see that figure as well. With that being the median income, I'm curious at what the low and high ends of the spectrum were. $175,000 household income will be more useable income in some parts of the country than others.

Re: (1sttimevolvo)

When people like the Today Show's Al Roaker buy the XC90 they skew the averages.

I saw the show where Matt was reviewing the new 'crossover' SUVs. He got to the Volvo XC90 and said this is the one Al just bought.

I always wondered about those numbers too. But look at this example:

50 buyers who make 60,000 a year buy the XC90.

1 Buyer who makes 4 mil a year buys the XC90.

This equals 51 Buyers with an average income of 137,000.

Re: (zebulon)

Kevin,

The "Al Roaker" example would make sense if the Volvo press release said the "Mean" or "Average" income is $175,000. But it doesn't. The Volvo release says the "Median" Income is $175,000...this means HALF of Volvo owners make above $175K and half below $175K. That's why we're surprised...it's hard to believe that HALF of all XC90 owners come from households making over $175K a year.

Re: (tonytong01)

I'm curious as to when Volvo compiled their data. Was it prior to putting the XC90 into production - thus based off of market questionaires sent to owners of other Volvo products? This would be interesting (if not belaboring).

At the risk of possibly offending some readers (non intended, mind you) if the income numbers were compiled POST XC90 production, would it be possible that the buyers in the upper income range were buying a good safe SUV for their college-age child to trek off to Harvard, Columbia, Yale or Princeton, rather than risk their lives in that 2 year old Ford Explorer? Mummy and Deddy would sleep much better at nite!

(I say with tongue planted firmly in cheek).

And to further split hairs on the issue, the poll question is "What is the average age of XC90 drivers?" Not owners.
