- The Polestar 2 is the First EV to be Crash Tested by the Volvo Group
Featuring Brembo brakes, Öhlins dampers, 22 available driver settings, and lightweight 20-inch forged alloy wheels, the Polestar 2’s Performance Pack will be familiar to any fans of Volvo—and that’s a good thing.
The four-piston aluminum brake callipers have been designed with Brembo “Stile” do fit Polestar’s distinct Scandi aesthetic. Inspires be the lines of the Polestar 2 and designed to be as aerodynamically optimized as possible.
Since it’s an EV, the brakes will also be optimized for the requirements of drag reduction and energy recovery. Polestar says that the calipers are designed to optimize energy recovery thereby extending the range.
The 20-inch rims, meanwhile, are made of aluminum and are stronger than the Polestar 2’s standard wheels (19- and 20-inch alloy wheels are available). Despite that extra strength, each wheel weigh 3.3 lbs less than the standard options. Less unsprung mass means better grip, as do the Continental SportContact tires that are made especially for the car.
As far as sprung mass is concerned, it will all be handled by Öhlins’ excellent Dual Flow Valve (DFV) adjustable suspension. Put simply, the system allows the suspension to be stiff over smooth roads and soft over bumps.
Put less simply:
“For low-speed damper movements, where the shaft is moving slowly, an adjustable needle controls the oil flow and the damper’s response. At higher speeds, where the shaft moves more quickly and in a greater range, a shimmed piston valve stack alters the flow for optimized responses. Any sudden suspension impacts and road surface roughness are controlled by the DFV system.”
As for visual flair, Volvo fans will, again, be familiar with what’s coming. Gold dust caps for the tire, gold seatbelts, and gold brake callipers, to go along with the new wheels.
