Accidents that happen in the FIA World Touring Car Championship will now be attended to by a special 2018 Volvo V60 Polestar safety car.
The car doesn’t just look the part, either. It’ll take off in a hurry, too, thanks to carbon fiber aero additions that help increase downforce by 30% to make sure that it can get to an incident quickly.
The 367 hp V60 is also equipped with a roll cage and rescue comms in accordance with WTCC and FIA safety requirements.
To be sure that drivers will be able to give it 10/10th around the track, Polestar WTCC driver Thed Björk helped develop the car.
“With its high safety levels and easily accessible performance designed for all-year drivability, the Volvo V60 Polestar makes a perfect Safety Car,” said Björk. “The new aerodynamic enhancements make the car even more predictable and rewarding to drive in inspired or critical situations, both on the roads and on the racing circuits.”
Björk currently leads the WTCC drivers’ championship by just half a point.
Although they won’t be equipped with the roll cage or the communications equipment, regular humans can benefit from the same aero improvements as the WTCC safety car with the 2018 Volvo V60 Polestar.
