Although Volvo has decided not to wait for a dedicated platform to start producing EVs, it may still get one soon. Geely unveiled its Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), which it says will be used by 16 all-new electric vehicles.
Volvo’s XC40 Recharge and the Polestar 2 both used a modified version of the XC40’s gas-powered chassis, rather than a dedicated electric chassis. The move is noteworthy because other brands, like VW, have dedicated substantial sums of money to engineering new, EV-only chassis.
Now, though, the SEA platform will be used in cars from Volvo, Lynk & Co, and Geely itself.
“Our development of this transformative electric vehicle architecture marks the biggest leap forward at Geely in more than a decade,” said Li Shufu, Geely’s chairman. “This far-reaching innovation will greatly expand the volume and scalability of our zero-emission models, and we intend to offer the benefits of this innovation to other manufacturers”
Sufu also says that, like VW and GM, it will be selling the platform to other manufacturers, who can simply put a car body on top of the electric chassis.
“Open-source architecture will be a hallmark of new mobility services, of which Geely Holding is proud to be the pioneer,” he said.
The platform will be an all-rounder, able to support small vehicles like the XC40 all the way up to 60 series and 90 series cars. It will also be flexible enough to offer FWD, RWD, and AWD. It will reportedly offer up to 435 miles of range.
