- Volvo Gets Into Another Kind of Safety with Armored XC90
You’ve probably never heard of it, but one of the coolest branches of the Volvo group is this one. Arquus. Formerly Renault Trucks Defense, they build crazy armored military vehicles. With names like Fortress, Dagger, Bastion, and Torpedo. This is their latest. The Scarabée, French for Beetle.
It’s smaller and lighter than a Humvee, but then again, what isn’t. It’s a diesel-powered, electrified armoured vehicle that comes with a 12.7mm machine gun, a 30mm anti-tank weapon, and all sorts of radar systems. You can even toss it out of a plane should the need arise. With a parachute, of course.
The real party trick is the all-wheel drive and steer system. That’s right, all-wheel steering. And unlike supercar AWS systems, where the rear wheels turn just a few degrees, these rears turn almost as much as the fronts. It can crab sideways, it can maneuver quickly, and it can almost spin on a dime. We had better not hear any quick 180 jokes here, merci beaucoup.
The Scarabée was shown off in May at the company’s tech days demonstration event, and last month at the Paris Air Show.
