This is very exciting. Thanks for finding this! It does indeed look like a drive mode button. Would still prefer the physical switch, but will definitely take this over the modes being buried under many button pushes right now...

Yes, it is a drive mode shortcut. The lower right part of the display above the climate control bar is dynamic and can change depending on what you're doing. In low speeds, it can show the camera button or the drive mode button. The lower left will show recently used apps.

Per Volvo: "If you’re a plug-in hybrid driver, we’re making it easier for you to get the most out of your electric powertrain. Via “Drive Modes” on the home screen you can easily access “Pure” mode alongside other options. If you’ve just arrived in a town centre and want to drive on electric power only, it’s now just a tap away."

Wonder if the new 11inch screen could also be retrofitted in the 60 series cars.
Doubtful. But with Volvo walking back its all-EV stance, I wouldn't rule out a similar refresh for the 60 and 90-cluster cars.

They wouldn't have to add a software "drive mode' button, if they would have just left the physical button. Sarcasm aside, glad to see this is coming for us in 2025!

With my first (well second wife has an xc40) volvo coming in 2-3 weeks, this will knock out one of the few concerns i had the infotainment system. seems like a great upgrade. Wonder if they can make CarPlay wireless without any hardware tweaks. Rumor is that genesis is OTA upgrading their cars in 2025 to wireless CarPlay and doing it via software. I do plan on adding a otto or carlinkit, to make CarPlay wireless, but i am not sure how well it integrates access to google options and car control if running CarPlay wireless with an adapter... not much info out there eon this in Volvos. But overall it sounds like my timing is great. Dealer also confirmed polestar optimization will be added as soon as the car hits the dealer and can be built into my lease.

I briefly tried my CarlinKit for wireless CarPlay that I used in my '19 V90 but didn't have any luck in my '24 V60. not sure if I need a firmware update or newer model.

DUDEE!!! This is awesome! When I was deciding between a late 2022 or early 2023 T8.... the AAOS being the primary difference, I definitely considered the "updatability" of AAOS as a big benefit over the "end of life" Sensus UI of the 2022.

Like, I had hoped that significant upgrades would come and make the underwhelming AAOS system worthwhile... and the time has finally come! YAY! Love it when a long term bet pays off.

Love the presented update. Hope my V60 will arrive updated or ready to be updated.
I have an S60 2025 arriving in 2-3 weeks, spoke to my sales person (who is pretty well versed compared to most car sales people i deal with) he said their understanding is the software rollout will begin in a few months. Giving them a few months with the software "live" in the new EX90, to fine tune and debug it a bit more. It's "believed" the updates will roll out through the first or second quarter of 2025. So could be a while. Id like to think any car rolling off the assembly line should be able to ship with the update .. no reason not to . Unless they want to release it based on the actual units and screen size in the cars. That likely will make the 9" screens last i bet.

From watching the 90/90 event yesterday and trying to look carefully t the screen shots looks like the lines of icons changes with the size of the screen, making older models with 9" screens having less info on the screen as opposed to just making the icons and windows smaller either way.. sure looks like it will make a big difference and address many of the cons i had when i made my pros and cons list to get my S60.

Some important clarifications for the benefit of everybody excited here. Like me!

  • The EX90 runs completely different software on completely different hardware, powered by Snapdragon Cockpit, Unreal Engine, etc. The EX90 is a SPA2 vehicle with an entirely new vehicle architecture.
  • The user interface is what is changing on existing AAOS cars. The underlying software is not, but will be improved. It's probably best to say the interface is "EX90 inspired" but it's not EX90 software.
  • The refreshed 2025.5 XC90 will receive the UI updates when it ships later this year. Volvo doesn't want to kill the hype and release it on other models before the new XC90 begins customer deliveries.
  • The rollout plan is still being defined. Volvo was very intentional in stating "2025". However, my internal sources have stated early 2025. Again, vague.
  • This update will be available for ~2.5 million cars. Only Tesla has ever attempted something like this. Volvo will be slow and methodical in ensuring it works.

This is huge. My 2025 is my first touchscreen car and having google maps is awesome. But not being able to see the name of the song, or do anything without switching away from maps is annoying. I certainly feel like the 9" screen is a nice size (I don't want a 32" TV in my car) so this looks like a perfect upgrade to make the car feel fresher and less distracting while driving. The Settings -> Driving -> Drive Mode is absolutely ridiculous. This is not a Samsung tablet, this is a 4500lb projectile we should not have to risk our lives digging thru menus to engage Pure mode.

Looks like two taps actually. One to hit the "Drive Mode" button and one to select "Pure". I hope I'm wrong.

Looks like 2 taps to me as well. I guess it's better than 3 taps, but not as groundbreaking as people made it out to be.
It's indeed 2 taps vs 3 but also looks like the buttons (especially the first tap) is a bit bigger. All in all a big upgrade to me. However they should just get back to the old mid-tunnel between seats without that much piano black and with the drive mode gauge.
