Volvo released this picture today:

119527

I tried to arrange the cars by their size:

119528

There is one car smaller than the XC40 (XC20?), and there are two more vehicles in the 40 range. One of them is going to be presented today, and I guess it will be a C40 SUV Coupé and a V40. Next we have cars that seem to be XC90 and S90. The most interesting car is the one on the right which looks like a minibus.

Geez, I know beauty is in the eyes of the beholder but that C40 recharge is not looking good. IMO, the least pleasing Volvo in this current era. Although I would take the tail lights which seems to be inspired by the Volvo Concept Estate. Take those taillights and add them to the next generation V60 and V90, now were talking.

I don't like it either. At all. It's just an XC40 with a curved roofline and ugly spoilers. The interior seems to be all the same.

What surprises me is that there hasn't been any new Volvo design since May 2016 when the 40.1 and 40.2 concepts were presented. All Volvo car designs (including Polestar 2) do either go back to the Concept Coupe and Concept Estate or to the 40.1/40.2.

The minibus is the XC100 I'd wager (not really, I don't like to wager). By taking a shorter front (with no ICE) you can give more passenger volume in the same overall length... Don't call it a minivan though, that's not trendy. But the utility value of a mini van is really hard to argue against. Here's to hoping the sedan looking one has a convertible option!

I've never liked the looks of the Volvo SUVs. The XC40 has kind of grown on me, though, and looks much better to my eye than do the XC60 and XC90. Volvo has always done better with its design of its wagons, in my opinion. I think that the C40 looks a lot like the Mach-E, for one, which isn't a plus, but I don't think that I'd not buy the C40 because of its looks. To me, the C40 looks better than any Volvo SUVs. I, too, would prefer to see all-electric V60 and V90 Cross Country wagons most of all. Hopefully they'll be coming sooner rather than later.

Interesting how different tastes are. To me this looks like a Polestar 2 that went on a junk food diet for a couple of years. It just looks obese. Then again the XC40 is my least favorite looking of the Volvo SUVs. If the V60CC was just a little higher off the ground (aging knees) and electric version would awfully tempting.

The problem with the wagons is the only time I get to talk to customers about them is here on the forum... I can go months between selling one new.
Yes, and that's sad to me. Wagons sell really well still in Europe. I don't quite understand why they sell so poorly in the US. I'm glad that Volvo hasn't abandoned them. I have bought three Volvo wagons, and am ready for a Volvo wagon BEV now.

I buy too many project cars, tractors, and firearms to make a new Volvo fit my budget (plus we get one as a demo car so the motivation to part with my money there is lacking even more), but if I were to, I would 100% be waiting for an electric wagon or convertible.

Here's what I think I see, don't totally agree w/ author:

Row 1: XC40, XC90 (SPA2)
Row 2: C40, C20, S60 (SPA2)
Row 3: XC60 (SPA2), XC100 (SPA2)

Figure XC90 "SPA3" will land around 2029 for MY30, only as EV? Then other SPA2/3 will follow in short order?
Yes, I was surprised to see the C40 revealed today. There were lots of rumors over the last year that the XC90 would be the second Volvo BEV. Perhaps the order of reveal in that diagram is from left to right (irregardless of row). That might make the XC90 next.

I was wondering if the "interlaced" laydown of vehicles contained any clues. The pattern fits for XC40 and C40 so far, and I think XC90 SPA2 (incl. EV) might be seen later this year, then on sale in 2022 for MY23.

But I had the impression that XC100 wouldn't be more than a year or so behind next XC90. If that's the case then timing is tight to launch XC20, and then XC60 & S60 on SPA2. Or maybe that all happens through MY26 or so? With 7 year cycle in mind, SPA2 XC90 due for MY23, XC60 for MY25, and S60 for MY26 (I think that's right).

But yes I think the clue possibly the sequence of EVs: XC40, C40, XC90 (SPA2), XC20, XC60 (SPA2), S60 (SPA2), XC100 (SPA2). But why over three rows vs. two? Wonder if there's another clue in there somewhere...

Electric cars provide a unique opportunity for each auto manufacturer to differentiate themselves inside and out. Make the inside feels spacious and take advantage of that flat floor. And the outside have a unique exterior that speaks to your vision of the electric future, push the wheels out to the edge to make it look sporty, and yet create interior space. Make it feel like less is more, the Porsche way but for them you pay a PREMIUM for literally less.

I really hope the Polestar 3 is a jaw dropper and if that disappoints, the production version of the Precept can't come soon enough. Because the existing brands are bringing the guns;

Porsche Taycan - Understated Porsche looks, probably unbelievable performance
Audi e-Tron GT - IMO, gorgeous, interior typical Audi
Hyundai Ioniq 5 - Kudos to the Hyundai design team! The style is taking inspiration from the past but moving it forward that's uniquely Hyundai. Great first step for the sub brand Ioniq, can't wait how the Prophecy concept translate into production
Ford Mustang-E - Not my type, but I'll take that front simple console design
Mercedes - EQ series?
BMW - They missed their chance with the i brand, chasing the HP wars and losing sight of the electric future. The i was a great start, you have to let it percolate a little. They gave up and now playing catch up with the rest. Whomever designed the production version of the iNext, absolutely need to smoke a different type of strain, cause the BMW iX is hideous on the outside. However kudos to that wide screen driver/media panel.
GM - How can I forget that huge Hummer EV. I understand that some are not cross compatible but just saying, this is a differentiator for each respective brand.
Cadillac Lyriq - Will see how it translate production wise.
I can go on, but those are one that springs on my mind, and not to disrespect the momentum maker/disruptor in Tesla and its network.

Apologize for going on a tangent, Volvo had a great coming out of the gate now it needs to maintain that momentum in the electric space, when will you release your next concept and vision for the brand. Its been what ~5 years since. C'mmn, get your Scandinavian butts back to the drawing board, and be one with nature.

Personally I like the look of the wagons better but needed the height of the vehicle for ease of getting in, so I ended up with the xc40. The wagons are so rare to see.

Yeh, everyone wants to sit higher, or slightly higher. :) I will like C40 more than XC40, for the lower height (but still higher than sedan/wagon). Cargo space is not important on compact size car anyways.

But I don't agree with the all-EV-after-2030 plan. :) I'll still look for PHEV to buy after 2030.

I love this design language though. Why change when it works. :) P*3 and Precept will be newly designed.

I looked at it once again and mostly agree. However, I'm really convinced it is an S90 and not an S60 since it has the same length as the XC90 in the first row. Added some reference lines now.

The car I thought it would be a V40 is probably really the new XC60. Makes much more sense as it appears to be a bit larger than the XC40. And it is the best-selling Volvo, so it makes sense to electrify it as fast as possible. It came out in March 2017, so it should be due for a replacement no later than 2024.

What's missing is the V90. But since Volvo also has the V60, XC90 and V100 (or XC100), it can also be phased out. New V60 and S60 could be presented after 2025 since they only came out in February/June 2018.
