The New Volvo XC90 Spotted Testing

Feb 3, 2014 - 4:58:00 PM

Volvo has teased its future design direction with the Concept Coupe and the versatile Concept XC Coupe. A third Concept vehicle will be revealed later this year but until then, the CarPix spy photographers caught the second-generation XC90 performing cold weather testing in northern Sweden. These are not the XC70 test mule photos from several months ago; this is certainly a new Volvo platform.

Similarities with the Concept XC Coupe are seen with the new hood cleverly disguised to hide the actual slope downward at the nose. The extended distance from the dashboard to the front axle is visible. Volvo has gone to great lengths to conceal the actual bodylines, and accentuated wheel-arches. The camouflage cladding makes the rear fender appear to slope upward when it may actually curve downward. The photos make the new XC90 to appear similar to the BMW X5. Volvo has commented that the current capabilities of the first generation XC90 will be retained and from the profile, a third-row option appears certain.

The XC90 will be officially revealed later this fall and launched in early 2015. The second-generation XC90 will be the first Volvo released on the SPA platform with the Drive-E (VEA) powertrain. For the U.S. market, the engine will start with the supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder producing 302hp. Additional power may come from electrification and include Volvo’s latest generation all-wheel-drive system. An Aisin Warner 8-speed transmission, recently debuted in the 2015 60-cluster Drive-E vehicles will be standard.

We look forward to the next concept vehicle and additional spy photography as additional testing in the wild continues. #XC90spotting
