Today, Euro NCAP, the European organization responsible for crash testing and safety ratings, announced a list of its top five performers from the past year. While Volvo didn't grab the top spot, we're happy to say that the new XC60 did make the list, scoring well enough to grab fifth place, albeit in a tie. Here's the full set:
1. VW Golf VI
2. Honda Insight
3. Toyota Prius
4. Hyundai i20
5. Toyota Avensis
5. Volvo XC60
5. Opel/Vauxhall Astra
These vehicles delivered the best results out of the 33 different models tested by Euro NCAP in 2009. Each was subjected to a series of four different crash tests, a component test, and a final inspection based on standard safety features and results from the other tests. All cars were judged using star ratings, with five being the best. In case you were wondering, the worst performers of the year were the Suzuki Alto and the Toyota Urban Cruiser, both of which scored three stars.
The XC60's place on this list was undoubtedly aided by City Safety, the new technology that allows the car to stop itself when a low-speed collision is imminent. In adult passenger safey, the XC60 scored an amazing 94 percent, third place overall behind the VW Golf and Opel Astra. Chid safety was rated at a mid-pack 79 percent, while the XC60 topped the safety assist category. Pedestrian safety is what kept the XC60 from being higher on the list, however, as it scored just 48 percent. From what we've seen of the next generation City Safety that's able to sense pedestrians, however, we suspect the upcoming S60 will dominate the 2010 list.
