Volvo XC60 Wins British "Towcar of the Year" Award

Following on the heels of the S40 DRIVe's What Car? Green Car of the Year award, Volvo has secured yet another prestigious award in the land of tea and crumpets. This time it's the new XC60, which topped 39 other vehicles to win the annual "Towcar" award, a competition judged by a panel of British journalists from What Car?, Practical Caravan, and The Camping and Caravanning Club. The judges factored in towing ability, driving performance without a trailer, practicality, value, and safety."

"It also has to work in real life," explains Practical Caravan editor Nigel Donnelly, who has about the most British name ever, "on the daily commute, weekly shop and school runs, too, as well as making sense financially. The Volvo XC60 does all this and more." It's worth saying that the version of the XC60 judged for the competition was not either of the gasoline engine versions sold in the U.S., but instead the D5, a five-cylinder diesel. Still, it should still say a lot about the car's abilities regardless of the engine.

In addition to the XC60, two vehicles from parent company Ford won lesser awards in their categories, while one Volkswagen won two awards and a Skoda rounded out the group. Here's a full list:

Under 1425kg: Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDI 140 SE 5dr
