Event Preview: Best Volvo Showing Ever Expected this Weekend at Carlisle Import Show

This coming weekend includes one of one of the most eclectic import automobile shows on the East Coast. Carlisle Productions’ Import Kit/Replica show, held from Friday May 18 to Sunday May 20 is always a staple for nearby Volvo owners, though this year may prove a significantly larger draw. Volvo was named featured marque for 2007, and many known players in the Volvo community are making sure this is the biggest Carlisle ever for the Swedish brand.

First and foremost is participation by Volvo themselves. Volvo Cars North America maintains a vintage car collection on the East Coast, and we’ve been told that a number of these cars will be on display at the event, including a 1928 PV4, a PV444 once-owned by Colin Powell, a ’58 PV444, a ’59 Hearst/210 modified body, a PV445 pickup truck and their recently restored super-rare P1900 roadster.

The Volvo Club of North America is also stepping up its own presence. Rather than handled as a regional event by the local chapter, the VCOA is using this year’s Carlisle event as their 2007 East Coast Meet. The VCOA’s event-within-an-event will include a catered luncheon (reservations only, no further spaces available at this time) sponsored by Volvo, a people’s choice car show with awards and door prizes, a new C30 on display, the original P1800 from “The Saint” movie and Jon Peake’s P1800 VIN #1.

Tuners and companies catering to Volvo will also be present we’re told. Long-time Carlisle supporter EuroSportTuning will be back, this time bringing “something oldschool” we’ve heard. Heico Sportiv North America will also be traveling down from New England to display a V50 and a C70, each with the full Heico Sportiv treatment. Finally, Manheim Imports from Manheim, PA will also be bringing two modified S40s and one of their five Rs from their own dealer stock to display in the Volvo show field.

Swedespeed will again be attending, displaying our Project XC90 in the Volvo display field, along with our own admin Chris Stewart’s XC90 Sport. Many of our own forum members are planning on bringing out their cars, and we hear from our peers at Volvospeed.com that they also plan to have their members attending in numbers.

Volvo-specific activities aside, the Carlisle Import and Kit/Replica Nationals offer a wealth of things to see. In addition to Volvo, you’ll see a wide selection of other makes and models – all things imported. both vintage and modern, along with kit and replica cars as well. More than just a car show, the event also includes an SCCA autocross, a used car corral, rows of vendors, a wine tasting with live music on Saturday afternoon and a car giveaway on Sunday afternoon eligible to anyone with an entry ticket.

Making a weekend of any car show can be tough for most car enthusiasts looking to sell the family, though a wealth of additional nearby attractions may help you make the sell to those not so passionate about things with four wheels. The tourist destinations of Hershey, PA and Gettysburg, PA are both within roughly a half hour’s drive from Carlisle, and nearby Dillsburg, PA is home to Harr’s Drive-In Theatre. One of the ever dwindling number of drive-ins in the U.S.A., this must-do for any car enthusiast now features broadcast sound at 101.1 FM so that you can listen to the movie over your vehicle’s own sound system. Haar’s will be playing “Premonition” at 8:40 PM and “Spiderman 3” at 10:10 PM from May 18-20th. For the most hardcore, arrive Thursday night, before Carlisle’s Friday opening, and you can catch “Pirates of the Caribbean At World’s End” at 8:45 with a “Best-dressed Pirate” contest to win a treasure chest. Gotta love Americana.

This website has been covering the Carlisle event for years now (links below). If you’ve read about Carlisle and have been curious about attending, this year is definitely one not to miss.
