Ford Focus C-Max Revs Up New Engines and Transmissions

Ford's Focus C-Max, an MPV sold in Europe, shares Ford's corporate "C1" (a.k.a. "P1" in Volvo circles)small car platform co-developed by Volvo, Ford and Mazda for use in the new S40 and V50 models as well as the Mazda3, next generation Ford Focus and other future products rumored to include Volvo's XC50 SUV and the replacement to Land Rover's Freelander.

Sharing hard points through use of the C1 platform, new equipment availability on non-Volvo C1 vehicles could point to potential new equipment availability and/or parts compatibility with Volvo's new P1 offerings. As such, Swedespeed will continually try to keep its readers up to date on these shared platform cars. In this case, Ford Europe has announced new engine and transmission availability for the Focus C-Max, including new diesel offerings and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with "Sequential" style shifting, much like Audi's Multitronic, equipment that could be theoretically added to the S40 and V50.

The Ford Focus C-MAX line-up of engines and transmissions is further enhanced this month, with the addition of a Durashift CVT automatic, 145PS 2.0-litre petrol engine and Stage IV emission diesel variants.

Expected to account for 16 per cent of total UK Focus C-MAX sales, the new Durashift CVT is offered with the smooth 109PS 1.6 TDCi, in LX, Zetec and Ghia trim, from £16,590 on-the-road.

Durashift CVT is an electronically controlled, belt-driven automatic that allows the driver to choose a fully automatic mode or select a sequential manual mode, with seven preset gear ‘ratios'. Engineering partners Ford and ZF settled on a continuously variable transmission, as the ‘stepless' belt drive system offers a smooth operation to complement the refined driving characteristics of Focus C-MAX.

As such, Durashift CVT provides a relaxed, confident driving experience that belies its impressive performance – Focus C-MAX 1.6 TDCi CVT accelerates from 0-62 mph in 11.9 seconds and has a top speed of 112 mph. Combined fuel economy is rated at an efficient 49.6 mpg while CO2 output is 153g/km.

Now offered alongside this new model are 1.6- and 2.0-litre TDCi manual transmissions equipped with diesel particulate filters to meet stringent EC Stage IV emissions legislation and achieve lower tax brackets for company car drivers. Prices for these new diesel variants start from £15,790 on-the-road.

Not all the news is diesel, as a 145PS 2.0-litre Duratec petrol engine also joins the Focus C-MAX range from this month, available in Zetec and Ghia trim. The largest of the Focus C-MAX petrol engines offers a 0-62mph time of 9.8 seconds, top speed of 127mph and combined fuel economy of 38.7 mpg. Prices start from £15,740 on-the-road.

Said Focus C-MAX brand manager, Heather Yoxon: “Focus C-MAX has already made a real impact with UK customers, accounting for 13 per cent of sales in its segment so far this year. These new models will give customers even more options to find the right Focus C-MAX for them.”
