Home Field Advantage – 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show

One could say Volvo has the home field advantage at the LA Auto Show. No, it’s not exactly Gothenburg, but Volvo Cars North America is located just across the Orange County line in Irvine, and the Americans at Volvo are always good for some interesting plays, especially when they’re the home team.
There was no new Volvo model to be shown in LA. The C70 made its first debut months ago in Frankfurt, and it was decided to bench the C30 concept for a Detroit debut. However, that wasn’t enough to cause Volvo to roll over.
Instead, the company’s offense in LA was lead by a sinister looking black XC90 built by Evolve. As you can see, the car shows off some serious kit from the LA-based Volvo tuner, from an aggressive new body kit inspired by their well-known S60/V70R kit, to its large 6-spoke alloys, big blue brakes and two-tone leather innards, this XC would have a hard time not being noticed. And, that’s saying something in jaded and tuner-laden Los Angeles. Look for more information on this SUV, directly from Evolve master Don Nicholson, in these pages very soon.
If the XC90 was the quarterback in this collegiate bowl-timed auto show, its defensive line was made up of several other stars, including the IPD/Volvo XC70 from SEMA, last year’s 3CC concept car, and the brand’s most recent gravity racer. The rest of the line made up… errr… the rest of the line.
To Los Angeles, Volvo brought its A-game, and now moves on to Detroit on a very hectic schedule. Next year, however, the schedule won’t be so packed. Los Angeles will move its show date to November, adding a second Auto Show to 2006 only and thereafter occurring in November only so as not to conflict with Detroit.
