Volvo Cars Driving Academy looked to Volvo’s Special Vehicle Team to shed a few pounds and get an S60R into optimum condition. The Academy was looking for a “race vehicle” to provide maximum driving enjoyment for customers and VIPs visiting the Volvo demonstration center and Volvo Hällered.

Engineers Artur Frost, Tobias Liljekvist and Jan Ellwoth combined their skills to craft this special S60R. Artur works at Volvo’s Exhibition Service. Tobias is a technician at the Volvo chassis dyno and as a test pilot at Volvo Hällered. Jan has been working inside Volvo Cars Engine Division for more than 10 years and is currently working with engine hardware and software at Special Vehicles.

Jan performed the ECM software calibration and noted that it was “significant” but was unable to elaborate on the specific details. TME delivered a full exhaust system that included a downpipe, race catalytic converter and cat. back setup. The exhaust provides a delicious tone without annoying noises at any RPM. Backpressure was lowered to less than 35% of the stock system.

The car lost about 200 kg or 440 lbs through interior weight reduction that included removal of the A/C, audio system and other non-essentials. Some hardware components in the chassis were developed and delivered by Flash Engineering and Volvo used TME R-line springs.

This S60RR is definitely built for speed. For those who are lucky enough to get a ride, thank the team that built it and encourage them to pass on their tweaks to the production R assembly line.
