Since 1998 Volvo has been running Sunfleet, a car sharing service in Sweden, and now it’s going global.
With more than 50,000 subscribers in 50 Swedish cities, Sunfleet is already doing quite well in Volvo’s home market, but with the changing automotive landscape, the brand recognizes that it’s time to offer the service around the world.
“Private car ownership will not disappear, but as an automaker we need to embrace the fact that it will reduce and – more importantly – change,” said Hakan Samuelsseon, President and CEO of Volvo. “We have a proven and profitable concept in our home market which we intend to leverage as we develop a global concept.”
Volvo plans to offer an entirely new range of mobility services when Sunfleet goes global. Just what that means, though remains to be seen, as Volvo plans to reveal the details of its plan over the coming months.
For now, though, flexible on demand vehicle use is the primary focus.
“By recognizing this fundamental and rapid shift in individual mobility behavior and responding to it, we ensure that Volvo will continue to be relevant in the eyes of the consumer,” said Samuelsson.
