SONOMA, CALIF. (Aug. 25, 2012) – Alex Figge drove his K-PAX Volvo S60 to victory in the Sonoma Grand Prix today, leading every lap of the race, while teammate Randy Pobst finished third. It was Volvo’s 13th GT win since it began competing in the series in 2009, tying Porsche for most GT victories in that time span.

“This was a very satisfying win,” Figge said. “When I look at the struggles we had throughout the year – how close we came on several occasions – well, it all came together this weekend. To qualify on the pole, to win the race and to have this charity on the side of our car was very special.”

The charity to which Figge was referring is Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (www.alexslemonade.org). The charity, started by a little girl who had cancer, continues to raise money for pediatric cancer research. With September being National Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, the race car livery and team uniforms all featured the charity’s logo.

As a result of Figge qualifying on the pole and winning the race, Volvo was able to finish second in the manufacturers’ championship, one point ahead of Porsche. Cadillac won the championship.

Figge finished fifth in drivers’ points while Pobst ended the season in third. “Alex drove a great race and deserved to win today,” Pobst said. “For us to climb back and win the last three races of the season – and get second in manufacturers’ points – says a lot about the K-PAX team. These guys never gave up and kept working every day to make our cars reliable and fast. They deserve the credit for our success, that’s for sure.”

The Sonoma Grand Prix will be televised on the NBC Sports Network on Sept. 9 at 3:30 p.m. EDT.
