Volvo revealed the return of the sports wagon at the 2013 New York Auto Show. The Jacob Javits Convention Center’s spacious location in Manhattan was an excellent venue for manufacturers. Volvo’s booth was open and full of Scandinavian design. We had a few minutes to talk with John Maloney, President Volvo Cars North America, on the V60.

John wanted to pass on to swedespeed readers, “We heard you.”

swedespeed: When did the decision process begin for bringing the V60 to the U.S.?
JM: In the second half of last year, we began discussions on the V60. The market had shifted and we saw segment growth. The mid-life facelift provided an opportunity to co-market with the other 60-series vehicles.

swedespeed: Should U.S. buyers consider the V60 a replacement for the V70?
JM:The V60 is not a V70 replacement. It is more of a sports wagon. The XC70 is our full-size wagon and it is our highest loyalty model.

swedespeed:Will we see the V40 headed to the U.S.?
JM: At this time, we are not planning for the V40 in the U.S.

swedespeed: When will we see the V60 in showrooms?
JM: The V60 will come to market in January 2014. The R-Design will arrive later.

swedespeed: Will the current T6 be offered in the V60?
JM: The engine options are to be announced.

swedespeed: Are you concerned about the V60 cannibalizing S60 sales?
JM: No. We are expecting 3500 V60s in the first year.

swedespeed: Will T5 models offer paddles?
JM: The paddles will be standard on the T6 and optional on the T5.

While at the show we also learned that the Volvo Environmental Architecture (VEA) – four-cylinder engines will also arrive in January 2014. We did not have confirmation if the V60 will offer a four-cylinder but the timing would be right. Hybrid electric four-cylinder configurations are planned for the U.S. I know many of our readers were hoping for a diesel announcement. Unfortunately, the diesel option will remain in Europe.

We heard whispers that the T6 R-Design may receive a power bump next year. The R-Design suspension is unchanged for the facelift models. Rebel Blue may not appear on the 2014 color pallet but another love it or hate it color, Rich Java, will be offered on the XC60. Rich Java is very elegant in person, especially when surrounding the Soft Beige leather Inscription interior.

The 2013 New York International Auto Show delivered the much needed and anticipated design refresh. Android-based Sensus Connect with Spotify and 3D Google Maps, LED interior lighting, paddle shifters, TFT instrument cluster, R-Design sport seats with alcantara inserts, and the V60! The 2014 model year is shaping up to be one of the best for enthusiasts in quite some time, manual transmission or not.
