The Geneva show has finally arrived and with it, the new 2011 Volvo S60 has made its first official public appearance. We were there to capture the event, and a full gallery is linked at the bottom of this page. Volvo was nice enough to present the new sedan in a variety of colors and interior trims, and with a few choices of wheels and powertrains.
Our favorite has to be the orange car with a matching "beechwood" interior that evokes certain feelings of nostalgia for the S60R's "Atacama" leather. It really looks good, and unlike anything you'd get from BMW or Audi. The design of the car really does look great, too, better than the original press photos may have indicated. A lot of detail is squeezed into what isn't really that large of a package, though its short decklid does help the S60 look even more compact than it actually is. All of Volvo's light detailing, especially the soft-lit tubes of the taillights, is world-class.
Inside, our first impressions of the cabin are mostly positive, though we're a bit disappointed by the glossiness of the optional wood trim. We prefer a more natural look, and have really been spoiled by some of the materials chosen for cars like the current S40 or the XC60. We hope more choices will become available, because all that shininess makes the wood look more like plastic.
We had a quick chat with Volvo's US PR department at the show today, and unfortunately it does appear that the S60 T6 AWD is the closest we'll get to another S60R without someone big and important coming in and mixing things up. We just hope that the aftermarket steps up its game with tuning, brakes, bigger wheels, and a throaty exhaust, so we can build our own R. We'll bring you more updates from the show through this week, including a product planning interview we have lined up.
